I use the on demand paddle type made by Coburn. The water tank is mounted in the hay rack and pressure pump is below manger. I have used the float type but the motion of the trailer sometime made them overflow. The paddle type is also easier to keep clean since it doesn't have so much water sitting in it all the time. Just have to keep the hay cleaned out no matter which kind you end up with.

can i just ask why? I find that horses never eat or drink when moving, i used to be concerned but came to this realization. I would think that anything that has a float in it going down the road would just keep overflowing and empty all the water all over the floor.
That being said, I have had pretty good luck watering horses every 6 hours if it is hot, and I try not to haul more than 10 hours at a time.
This is just my opinion and one of the reasons i like a head to head trailer because it makes it pretty easy to water the horses if you need to.

There's no way to install the automatic waterers in your head to head trailer, so you will just have to continue to stop and water your horses and hope they stay hydrated and don't colic or develop ulcers. My horses eat and drink at their leasure while travelling and always arrive at the next roping fresh and relaxed.

We have a customer interested in adding them to a custom build trailer. I just love to hear people's opinions and experiences. Always something to learn that makes us better at what we do. We haven't personally used any so I'm interested to hear from those who have.

If your customer hauls a lot, the automatic waterers will make things easier on them and their horses. I use two 35 gallon tanks mounted in the hay rack and have them both plumbed to the pump so I can use either one individually. I use one for the horse water and the other to rinse horses off and as backup. I put electrolytes and cool aid in the horse water so they will drink no matter if the water tastes different. I also add my joint and vitamin supplements directly into the waterer. They dissolve and the horses gets them when they drink. Each horse gets whatever individual dose they require in their waterer. I've even added ice to the tank if it is really hot so they get a cool drink. Really not that expensive to install.

Where did you find the hay rack waterer? Was thinking of getting one for my trailer instead of carrying 5 gallon containers with water in them.

I got mine from Valley Vet Supply but a lot of places carry them. Mine are tapered top to bottom and dont catch much wind plus they help hold hay in. If you do a search I'm sure you can find them near you.
