Subject: Can a half-ton truck pull a two horse gooseneck?

Hello Trailer World Forum! I keep getting conflicting answers to my question about whether a half-ton truck can pull a two horse gooseneck. Assuming the trailer is relatively light weight, I know the F-150 and Chevy silverado 1500 are rated to pull more than the weight of the trailer, but I had someone tell me that the these trucks are not meant to have that much weight in their beds. What is reality here?

To illustrate:
A new Sundowner two-horse gooseneck weights 3440 lbs. empty. So, around 5,000 with my horse in it.

Most of the f-150's and Chevy 1500's are rated to tow well over that amount of weight. Soooo, what is the correct answer her? Yes or no?

Thank you in advance! :)

I have a 1500 1998 chevy 4x4 I pull a 4 horse gooseneck with 4 horses around home you should be able to pull a 2 horse with no problem would be good to have brakes on trailer working good check your owners manual and it will tell you your towing capacity or call a dealer they can tell you real quick

It's all about the pin weight on 1/2 tons, horse trailers are usually 20 - 25% of total weight on the pin. At 25% on 5000lbs. = 1250lbs. Taking into account the hitch, passengers and tack you can run out of payload fast. I had thoughts of a gooseneck as well for my 2011 silverado 1/2 ton, but stuck with a bumper pull to stay legal.

Yes...pin weight is a crucial component...

Yep, no problem. With a two horse and tandem axles the trailer is so short it puts very little weight on the hitch. Mine has a pin weight of 500#. Hardly makes the truck squat.

Which Sundowner? Their Charter straightload has the axles at the back because the sides have escape doors, and is very tongue heavy when empty. The slant loads without an escape door are very easy on the tongue. So yes- you are right about curb weight, but check the other as well. Unfortunately, I don't know how you get a loaded tongue weight on a new trailer without loading it up with horses and going to the scales.
