Hoping the experts here can help me. I'm shopping for both a truck and trailer, so I want to purchase the best combination I can, used.

How heavy would a 4star 6 horse (head to head) be, loaded?

Do I need a 1 ton truck for that or would a 3/4 ton be able to do the job?

What is everyone's opinion on the best truck *and best years, specs* of that truck? As far as fuel mileage and longevity.

Thank you so much!!

You are asking for a lot.
Weight of the trailer I have no idea. Do you want an LQ? My best guess would be at least 10,000 lbs likely more.
Truck. A one ton or more is needed. If you are asking about fuel mileage, prepare to be depressed.
Brand, I like Chevy's. I also like the gas engine... but I make big modifications and double the horsepower. The engine is not nearly as important as stopping power. Get top of the line aftermarket brakes.
Best truck for you.... The big 3 all make good-great trucks today. Like I said I like Chevys. The best truck for you is the best truck that you are able to drive. Get the truck that you are most comfortable sitting in and feel like you have the best control while driving and have the best visibility in your mirrors. Test drive the trucks and do a few maximum effort panic stops. Then get on an empty section of freeway or highway and do some quick lane changes and see which truck you think handles the best for your driving style.
And example of best vehicle for a situation. A friend of mine has a Corvette and I have a Camaro I can do a slalom course in my Camaro faster than I can do it in his Corvette. His Corvette is superior to my Camaro in every aspect except my driving style.
What my rig is is a 2500 HD Chevy with a supercharged 6 L gas engine making about 600 hp pulling a four horse 10 foot short wall Lakota trailer
Good luck happy hunting.

Well a little more information of what you plan on hauling, how often you plan on hauling and where you plan on hauling, for example...if you were loaded with 6 Percherons...they alone could put 6+ tons in payload in your trailer...

You are looking at 1 ton dually diesel as a minimum, especially if you want your rig to last several years...

If you are looking at a six horse to haul commercially, then your truck specs jump a level, because the governmental road agencies are always on the prowl for income gathering opportunities, such as overweight on an axle or bad brakes, etc.

I have always been a Ford guy but after buying my 05 Featherlight 8587 4h 13' shortwall living quarters trailer, I started looking for a new truck. I went to a 2014 Ram 3500 cummings diesel dually flat bed. I really like the Ram for power and the exhuast braking is awesome. I get around 13.5-15 mpg empty driving around and around 8-9 towing the trailer. I don't complain about that milage because it's a heavy truck and I bought it to work hard. I feel much better going down the road in this truck then I did in my single axle Ford. Don't know if that helps, I would guess my trailer loaded is around 13-15k.

Not sure if you've ever pulled a 6H head to head before, but-
Base trailer will typically be at least 30' floor length. 7'6" tall & 8'W (lots of wind) and weigh in the 9,000# range. Add 6 horses (and many seem to end up with 8 or more) and you are at a minimum of 16,000 with about half of your weight in livestock, which shifts around more than say a 15K living quarters. That load shifting part is what can make it so interesting at times.
So- in my opinion the 3/4 ton is out from the start. A newer well equipped 1 ton may be just fine, check your specs. Haulers who travel a lot, sometimes end up 1 size up from that even.

If you are hauling for profit you need to check into the CDL requirements for states you'll likely travel.  Some people are finding that staying just under those CDL magic numbers saves headaches and hassles.  A one ton would be the bare minimum, but a 4 or 5 series truck would really be better suited to safely haul with all six slots full and the extra junk that will seem to linger in the center aisle.   When you get a big trailer like this know that you'll be hauling everything under the sun that fits inside the roof and between the sidewalls.  I have a Ford 2015 F350 crewcab 4x4 dually with a flatbed and love the truck to pieces.  I grin when people say "get the BIG truck" because I've never seen it really have to work yet in the 9,000 miles I've driven so far...even pulling the large tractor out of the edge of the pond yesterday.  I also had a 2001 F250 with the 7.3L engine (the legend) and it was great.  I would stay far away from the 6.0, don't believe them when they say it's been bulletproofed just keep walking!  Always check the weight ratings on any truck and trailer, they should match up to keep you from getting in trouble with law enforcement...the truck CAN always be rated higher than the trailer but not the other way around.

Another note about the 6 horse head to head style trailers, they usually don't have enough ventillation to be hauled in the southern states during the heat of the summer.  Make sure you get as much air moving around those horses as you can or you'll have respiratory problems out the wazoo.
