Thanks so much to you guys who have given so much info on DIY living quarters. My husband and I are going to attempt it in my 4' short wall trailer. Can anyone post pics of their 4' short wall (or shorter) DIY living quarters or floor plans they used? I'm sure I'll be asking more questions, and maybe I'll be able to help a few people when we are done -- I hope more on what to do than what not to do;)

Go to the trailers for sale section. Select GN trailers with LQ's. You will find many photos. You can google the individual trailer manufacturers and most provide floor plans.

Trailer ID/306290 has a 4 ft shortwall.  This is my friend's trailer and it is done well to use the space.  Also has a shower toilet and walk thru to horse area.  Pics aren't that good, but has cabinets with built in microwave and underneath is a small fridge.  Has the step thing to get into bed.  He decided he wanted a table and larger space so put this one on the lot and bought himself one with a 10 ft shortwall.

Shoot, I can't see the pics you posted.

Thanks for the advice to look in the trailers for sale. I've done that, but I usually can't tell what the short wall is. Maybe I'm not searching correctly. I'll try again.

Thanks, everyone. These are great, and I'm getting some really good ideas. I didn't realize that Todd's trailer is a 4' short wall until today. Amazing. I hope we can pull it off. I'm sure I'll have more questions soon, although I've been scouring this forum for weeks!

Not to get too far off subject, but "brushycreekranch" what was a ballpark price for having your 4' installed professionally?  I always wanted to know about what it would cost for mine, but have never hauled it in to get an estimate.  I understand if you're not wanting to post your cost, just thought I'd ask.

Thanks

OK, here's what I came up with. I guessed a little as to the size of cabinets, benches, etc., but you get an idea. The living quarters area itself is to scale (or pretty close). (Obviously, I did not include the sleeping area or horse area.) Each square is a foot (square foot, I guess you'd say). I will use a bucket-type potty that I'll put in the horse area when camping, etc. I might add a cowboy shower to the horse area, too, from the closet area. (The red line in the closet area is a built-in stand for saddle racks, but I removed the racks -- don't need them.) I'll have RV or marine batteries and a Honda 2000i generator. Input welcome.

we camp up with a creative idea on how to insulate the round part of the bunk area.  I used the same flexible ceiling panel stuff to go into the corners.

We DIY'ed our 2 ft short wall.  We did not do any plumbing so we still roughed it a bit.  We did the rv toilet that I would set up just outside the walk thru.  We built the cabinet for fridge and storage like your idea, but we actually built the cabinet for fridge into part of the gooseneck.  I am sure you have more room because it is a 4 ft shortwall, but we actually build a corner cabinet where in the oddball part of the wall with the sharp angle.  It was extremely valuable.

Not sure why my pics didn't show up. If anyone wants to see them, they can message me with an email address and I send them to you.

Jaas....it was $3500. but I bought the appliances seperate.  I was very pleased! The guy that did it use to be with one of the top conversion companies that closed down. So, he had alot of LQ experience. He has his own shop and specializes in custom cabinetry and does a few conversions. I dropped it off and picked it up about 2 weeks later.

Ours isn't really a fully finished LQ, but we added cabinets to best utilize the small space (3.5' short wall). My husband got a couple premade cabinets, counter top, and extra cabinet doors to make a custom corner cabinet with shelves inside. We also had to add the walk through door, and we have a bucket toilet and shower in the horse compartment.

We are getting ready to start redoing my 4' short wall Exiss. The previous owners used cheap showerboard on the walls and ceilings and installed a huge L-shaped bootbox as the only storage. I have lived with it this way for almost 5 years and now my son is big enough to start going with me on weekend camping trips. It's time to redo it! I am wanting to add some overhead cabinets and maybe a short countertop along the long wall. The slant wall (I think) will have a futon up against it. I'm not interested in adding a bathroom/shower/sink. We have a port-a-pot we can put in the back and most places we will go have a shower. If not, we can deal with it for a weekend! I want to include a microwave and fridge (electric), also. The cabinets will be the ones that my mom took out of her trailer when she had it remodeled, so cost "should be" relatively cheap. I hope....

Most of the smaller campers I see try to include a shower in them. Does anyone have pictures of one similar to the setup I am going for? I've been looking online for the last 2-3 years and haven't found many without the shower/sink/toilet stuff in them.

Thanks in advance!

Where you camp, do they have electric outlets so that you can plug in your fridge & microwave? Or will you be using a generator?

Where do you plan on putting the shower/sink/toilet?

I have a 4' short wall and no walk thru door to the horse area. I insulated it all and used 3/8" exterior glue, plywood bead board screwed to furring strips.

I'm crowded with a short counter over a deep set of drawers and 2 small cabinets over the counter. I have a 2 burner camp stove with a hose through the jack wall to the LP tank. This is also how I get LP for my Buddy heater. No refrig - only ice chests. No microwave, I have a coleman grill that folds down and is the last thing loaded and first thing unloaded.

I store clothes in the bottom drawer; camping gadgets, first aid, shower stuff in the middle drawer, and kitchen stuff in the top drawer. I have a hassock-type porta-potty that slides behind a curtain under my sink which drains via a section of garden hose to the great outdoors. ; 0  I have jugs for drinking water - no plumbing.

I do have a queen sized short mattress in my sleeping area, with lots of room on either side. I've framed in a closet area in the deep narrow corner and built a ladder to the sleeping area.

My shower is at the back of my trailer. I have a steel rod that hangs between the 2 doors when they are opened (no rear tack) that I hang heavy fabric from for a curtain and I have a Coleman Hot Water on Demand unit. It and the water sit in the trailer, I stand on the ground to shower. Works great. Friends have used it too.

My lighting is with a Ryobi battery hand held lantern. I charge up 2 or 3 battery packs (the same ones you use for a drill-driver) and take them with me.

That's the site I was talking about above, but didn't have the link.  I love that company's 2'sw trailer conversion.  I like efficient use of little spaces, though am glad 4'.  I really like that site and think the company strikes a nice balance. I have heard that they do good work, also.

There are several ideas that just "stuck" with me from that sight. I really like the pantry on the slant wall with the drop-down table and the across-corner cabinet, too. I am really liking the L-shaped bench, too, but for future resale, I'd probably be better off with the basic 4' package. Thanks so much for sharing! I'd come across several that were similar, but it seems like these just were more along the lines of what I was actually looking for! The corner floor-to-ceiling cabinet is a MUST! WOW! I can't wait to get started! The rest of the "junk" is coming out tomorrow while the weather is going to be awesome here in NE Missouri. I've got to figure out if my roof is already braced for air or not and start pulling carpet up, also. The local welding shop is guessing it will cost me around $100 to patch the hole where the window unit was stuck through the wall. I'm guessing it will cost me about that much, also, to have them blow a hole through the roof, as well.Has anyone attempted to put in roof air themselves? My boss did it in a car hauler, so I'm hoping we can manage in my horse trailer, as well! Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

When I bought my GN trailer, it did not have the ceiling vent. I took it to a guy who used to do interiors on Sundowners, and all he used was 2x2 lumber to build the "bracing" after he cut the hole in the roof.

My trailer is galvanized steel.

And, I misread your original post saying you did NOT want to bother with plumbing stuff.

Being only 5'3"... I frequently have trouble reaching stuff in tall cabinets ... but if you want some lightweight, ready-made ones, and don't mind resin instead of wood, take a look at the Suncast brand that Sears sells for garages. They are very sturdy, deep drawers and cabinets with latches ... even the smaller overhead ones.  My photo album here shows some.
