Thinking of buying a Featherlite 4 horse from folks down the road. 6' ft sw, no LQ but does have mid tack. Trailer has no tag (never registered by them since they bought it from some other guy). VIN plate also gone from neck. I have looked everywhere on the trailer trying to find a VIN or partial VIN so I can run the info thru DPS. Does anyone know where the VIN might be stamped on a Featherlite? Thinking it's a 1999 or 2000 based on pics of similar trailers I've seen. I wouldn't otherwise consider the trailer but price is right. Do not believe it is stolen - they've had it too long and have hauled it with no problems. I just want to either register it with current VIN or simply register it as homemade trailer. Suggestions? Thanks..

Don't know about TX, but in PA I would never be able to register or title a trailer, without having a current title signed from the last seller.

Each state has different regulations, so I would check with your local DMV BEFORE you purchase the trailer. Other wise you may end up with a big hunk of metal you can't use.

Thanks gard. I've already been down to DPS and picked up form to have trailer titled as 'homemade trailer'. Apparently it's not that big of a deal. All they need is type trailer, gross weight and estimating carrying weight (in my case, most of the time it will be 2 horses and gear). Then it's titled as a homemade trailer and I get a tag, etc. I was just trying to figure out if maybe the VIN was stamped somewhere out of the way so I could avoid the 'homemade' part of the equation and just get it done right. Thanks for the info...

Something is odd about this trailer. There should be a metal plate attached to the right side gooseneck frame that indicates the model #, year of make, serial #, axle ratings and size, such as 7x7x20. I would be suspicious if this plate was missing.

Contact Featherlite, as they can tell you where they stamped the last 6 of the VIN on the trailer. With that, they can tell you the full VIN.

Be wary of the homemade route. Usually that route requires an in person inspection by a DOT officer, and he isn't going to buy the story of it having been built in your backyard. Besides- plate missing- raises warning flags in my book.

Thanks...I've already got an email into Featherlite asking about the VIN. As for the VIN plate on the neck, yep it's gone. Looks like it might have been pulled off on purpose, or maybe got hung on something. At any rate, I like the trailer so gonna continue to try and get it resolved. Just thought someone might have known where I could look for the VIn in the secondary location...Thanks to all for the feedback!

might be a trailer with a loan on it and the bank may have the title, and at some point might decide they want it. Even if its on your driveway. Call Featherlite

I would be very suspicious of a trailer without a vin # tag. Where is the title? This sounds risky.

It is stolen...see this...and wake up..
Virginia will help you register a stolen trailer....all you have to do is

* slap on a farm tag
* or register it as a homemade trailer
* or get a registration from Maine and make up your own vin number......

One popular scam is to buy a manufactured trailer, insure it, then remove the VIN and report it as stolen. Re-branding it as a homemade trailer with a new license plate can be as simple as filing bogus paperwork with another state.

Melancon did this recently to prove his point. He applied from Virginia for a Maine trailer license with a fabricated VIN (ST467OL499EN17I99AM). For a $50 fee, he received his license plate in the mail with official documentation. Apparently no one noticed the message hidden in the VIN if you remove the numbers: STOLEN I AM.

The Governor of South Carolina does not care that your trailer is getting stolen and does not care that two parents were killed in her state and NOBODY KNOWS WHO KILLED THEM...BECAUSE OF NO REGISTRATIONS FOR TRAILERS!!!!!

Ron J. MelanconOPP notes increase of insurance frauds involving 'homemade' trailers, marina chop shops and ATVsTEXT SIZE bigger text smaller text2011-07-27Car theft may be grabbing headlines these days, but frauds involving other types of vehicles have emerged recently on the radar screens of Ontario police. These include insured ‘homemade' trailers, watercraft and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).Sergeant Stephen Boyd of the Ontario Provincial Police's organized crime enforcement bureau discussed these and other emerging fraud trends at the ISB Canada education series seminar, Combat Auto Fraud, held in London, Ontario on July 26."Homemade trailers, this is probably the hottest thing going on right now in the province [of Ontario]," said Boyd. "Do you know how many how many homemade trailers are registered in the province each year? We have had over 400,000 homemade trailers [registered] in Ontario over the last five years."All of these trailers are ‘homemade.' Do they look homemade?"Boyd's rhetorical question accompanied a slide presentation of ‘homemade' trailers, some of which were fully enclosed - and clearly commercially manufactured - trailers. He noted people obtain licenses for the trailers, obtain insurance for them, report them stolen and then re-register for a new homemade trailer license."We've lost 11,000 already in our jurisdiction [in 2011]," Boyd noted, adding that up to $300,000 to $400,000 worth of other property can easily go missing along with the trailer. One trailer, for example, went missing along with an expensive watercraft. And speaking of watercraft, marina chop shops are coming into vogue. As in scams involving auto chop shops, boats are reported stolen, an insurance claim is made, and the ‘stolen' boat is actually carted to a marina, where the boat is stripped for parts that are re-sold.ATV thefts are also an emerging trend."ATVs are the Number 1 stolen [item] in OPP jurisdictions" across the province, Boyd said. One group of thieves stole a number of ATVs, sold them, and then stole them from the buyers to whom they had just sold them. They proceeded to re-sell them a second time for $1,000 per ATV. "That was entrepreneurial," Boyd said caustically.Do you understand that the United States Insurance Companies do not care? In fact in the United States we have 10 States with NO REGISTRATION for these trailers.WE have a solution a solution that nobody in Government and the Insurance Industry wants to happen. It is called the NATIONAL UTILITY TRAILER REGISTRY...where we all agree to have a unified vin number system and no more homemade registration of trailers. In fact we show people how to do it....in order to get you to wake up.www.dangeroustrailers.org

It would be interesting to hear from turner007 as to how his situation turns out. When he contacts Featherlite to get the VIN he may find out whether this trailer is "wanted" as stolen.

Thought I would post an update on the missing Featherlite VIN. Good news!

Talked to Featherlite, who said there is a secret place with the VIN but would only provide it to law enforcement. So...law enforcement was called, who called Featherlite, and the VIN was found!

Tracked it all the way back to original title in Oregon, with one owner in between then and now. No reports of stolen or missing in US database thru law enforcement - looked in normal channels and thru horse contacts. Apparently this law enforcement guy has a lot of stolen horse trailer experience.

At any rate, he says the trailer is clean and they are issueing new title with original VIN. It's taken a while but all looks good!
