Am ordering a new Trails West 4 horse, I am trying to decide on the built in 4KW propane generator, or the mounted on the hay rack 4KW gasoline generator with a gas tank in the last manger storage area ????

Are the propane tanks permanently mounted? If so, you'll have to pull the trailer to a propane fill station every time you need fuel. Gasoline can be refilled while the trailer is set up at camp.

Currently we have a propane generator with a removeable tank. Our next trailer will have a gasoline generator. The propane tank is removeable, but it is larger and weighs more and is very difficult for one person to reinstall. Also you can carry a gas can with you and find gasoline about anywhere you go. With the propane you are limited to where you can refill.

I have had both and like propane much better. This year with the gas generator we have now, we have got bad gas 2 or 3 time and had to have the carb and tank cleaned out (this is from places we was using all the time) I never had issues with propane and even just 1 extra 20# bottle is easy to haul around if you happen to run out. You wil more than likely have 2 30# bottles mounted on your trailer.
On the rack is the only way to go in my opinion. Research this site back 360 days for generator and see if you can find anything else.

I had a 4 Star with a propane Onan in the back tack. I HATED it! The propane bottles were HUGE and very hard to deal with. The propane would freeze up in OKC every Dec even in an enclosed front trailer. Everytime I went to CO, WY, MT, I would have problems until the altitude adjustments were done. Then , I would have issues until the thing was adjusted back to lower altitude. Just hated the stupid thing. Now, I have a huge diesel Cat on my current LQ and LOVE it!

I have the Onan 3600 propane in its own compartment in the side of the trailer. I have no problems. I like it. Everything in the trailer is propane and I only have to deal with and carry one fuel. However, I am in the mountains and don't use AC. I have no experience with the gasoline kind except the little Honda 2000 back up generator.

I have an Onan Micro-quiet 4000 in our trailer, a 2001, have never had to do one thing to it.(we have changed the oil).....274 hours now. Neighbors have an Onan LP generator on their trailer, a 1997,, it has been in the shop 4 times in the last 2 years.......I think now tho it is really trouble free..
