Hi all,

Does anyone know anything about Southern Classic Horse Trailers?  The comapny? Quality of their trailers?  etc. I saw an ad today for one of their trailers and had never heard of them.  Googled the name but couldn't find a website.

Regards,

KIm

I think Southern Classic ceased operations in 08.  A phone call to the number listed by Paul will probably tell the story.

Thanks. I had never heard of them and didn't know anything about the quality of their trailers. Saw a used 3H Goose for sale and it looked like a fairly beefy trailer. Don't know anything about the construction though.

We have a 1996 Southern Classic 7 X 24 stock trailer. We bought it new from the factory and it has been a real good trailer with absolutely not problems. Its been well used, maybe sometimes abused and is still in excellant condition. The company is no longer in business, but I wouldn't be concerned about that. Their trailers were very well made.

I bought a 1993 Southern Classics 3H slant, all aluminum GN a couple years ago. Has removable rear tack (can go in dressing room too), thick mats in horse area, drop down windows, etc. Got a heck of a deal on it, only 5K! We put all new brake assemblies on it and new tires all around. Getting the LQ finished next month. Nice trailer and now nothing wrong with it. Held up very nicely since 1993. 20 years old and will last me well after I'm too old to ride.
Nowadays unless you're independently wealthy or want debt for life, good luck buying a brand new all aluminum trailer. Most are steel frame with aluminum now.

I believe the company rose out of the ashes, and is renamed Custom Classic trailers.  I know of a guy that bought a stock trailer from them, and it is a Custom Classic.

I have a 2000 3H mid tack trailer and I LOVE IT, did a lot of research before I bouth mine... same designer that came from Exis when they has a break up... mare with good .040 alum panels, floor is just like a semi trailer with bracing every 4 inches... has held up to all the hauling I do and still looks and pulls great... sad to hear they are not in business anymore. I need to get a rim for a spare!

I also have a Southern Classic. My understanding is that they went out of business around 2010. That's the latest model of SC horse trailer I've been able to find online as well.
My trailer is a beast when it comes to the competition. They just don't make them like this brand anymore. I would even go as far as to say they have 4Star brand beat on construction. They are so well built and rock solid! I have a 1993 that I put a full LQ in and love my trailer. I have looked into getting a brand new LQ but what I find is that they just don't build them to stand up like mine anymore. The quality just isn't there in the new brands. They're cheap and flimsily built.

Southern Classic Trailers went out of business in 2008. Custom Classic Trailers in Fairbank IA hired the (4) main welders coming from Southern Classic with 65 years combined experience in building and repairing Aluminum Trailers. CCT is owned by Don's Truck Sales in Fairbank and has been in business for over 55 years.Custom Classic Trailers used the knowledge from these experienced welders to develop new aluminum extrusions and structural designs to eliminate issues they had dealt with in all brands of aluminum trailers. Many manufacturers are cutting corners to improve their profits in the industry today --- Thus making CCT an excellent choice where strength and longevity are the main priority. This is brought to light with the number of Draft Horse and Commercial Hauling Customers using Custom Classic Trailers. Please call Roger @ Custom Classic Trailers for more information @ 319-635-2751 or use his email @ roger.m@donstrucksales.com

I have a friend who had one, they used it to pull percherons. The entire/floor frame separated and required quite a bit of reinforcing/welding to get it back to safe use. Other than that I know alot of the draft people consider it a pretty high end trailer

There were occasionally some issues ( very few )with the floors in Southern Classic Trailers. Some changes were made to address this by the old company (Southern Classic). I have seen floor issues in all brands of trailers over the years! When Custom Classic Trailers was started 3 years ago, those problems were addressed along with other improvements by increasing the thickness of material as well as upgrading the design of the main structure. The 65 years combined experience of the production staff in repairing all brands of aluminum trailers was also used to develop a unit that would meet the transportation needs of their customers for many years.

Have not pulled one. Have looked them over very well as was looking to purchase one. I would consider them the same quality as any of the Universal made trailers---Exiss, Featherlight, etc. Not top shelf (Hart, Elite, Platnium, Cim, etc), but should work great for the weekend warrior or occasional user IMO. They are sure priced well for that level.

Spin Doctor, thanks for your response on the Custom Classics. We are looking at a Featherlite stock combo because of the lighter weight of the overall trailer. We have owned a Southern Classic stock trailer, bought new in 1996. It has been a great trailer all around. Horses, cattle, back country hunting and vacations. We still use it for our everyday needs. When we learned Custom Classics was an offspring of S. classics we became interested. It seems that since the Universal Trailer take over of Featherlite, the quality of those trailers has gone down. As has the quality of many brands made after 2008. We checked the weight of the empty shells of a couple of the higher end trailers and they were still VERY heavy. Spoke with Custom Classics and was impressed with what they are producing. Still Very similar and even improved from our 96 Southern Classic. Thanks for any other comments you might have.

Something to remember. Less weight, less material. Less material, less strength and longevity. Just sayin'.

Kay, what you say IS true. We are on the search for the happy medium with quality, size, weight, and cost. We are not rodeo or horse show hauling. Drive a 1 ton deisel dually, but what we need is a smaller, agile, trailer that is no problem to pull mountain roads for a long trip, or work for weekends. The search is on. Thanks
