I have a 2010 Chevrolet Duramax Dually, I pull a 4 horse trails west with slide out its 44 feet long overall. I am getting between 6 to 8 miles per gallon when pulling loaded with water, hay horses, etc.  If you pull a similar size trailer I would be interested to know what truck you have ane what is your MPG pulling with horses. Lets keep it honest when reporting!!!!!

We have a 2006 Duramax dually and pull a similar sized trailer.  We recently pulled from Fl to Ga and averaged 8-9 mpg.

Have a 2008 Ford F350 Dually, 6.4 diesel, pulling a 1999 C&C 4h with 12ft. LQ. Ran from Missouri to Ohio and back in July and averaged a little over 10 mpg. Ran up to Northern Illinois last month and only averaged about 9mpg. But it was really windy in our face all of the way home.

Used to have a Dodge Ram dually with a V10 and it averaged 10mpg empty, 7-8 loaded.

The harder these new diesel engines work, the more soot they make. more soot equals more regen of the exhaust filter, more regen equals more wasted fuel... My 2011 Duramax dually will get 11.5 mpg pulling a 6 horse H2H at 60 mph. Gets 10.5 running 70 mph, empty it will run around 19.5 mpg at 75 mph. Slow down a bit and your mileage should improve, no jack rabbit starts....

Freightliner M2 Cat 3126 6 sp auto pulling 34' on floor no slide average between 32 and 35,000 pounds gross. Past 50,000 miles has averaged 7 mpg. Ford F550 with 7.3, full Banks mods and auto got exactly the same. Same trailer same miles, recorded every tank. Have seen as low as 5 and as high as 10, but MY real world number is 7!

I can't speak for your GM, But that's not 100% true with the new 6.7L fords.  When I'm towing ( working hard) and get my EGT temps above 572° the exhaust system will do a Passive Regen, Meaning it is using the wasted exhaust heat to clean the DPF. It does not dump extra fuel down the line to heat everything up.

Where normal driving kicks in a ACTIVE Regen every 200 miles or so,  I've gone over 1000 miles with an active regen when towing.

2001, F350, 7.3, combined rig at around 19,000 pounds, and I've been getting 9.5 to 10.7 mpg per truck computer. (usually over 10)

Last set up was cabover camper, close to same combined weight, and got closer to 9 mpg. Wind resistance sure made a difference.

I get 9 mpg pulling a 3h 17'LQ Trail Rider with our 2006 GMC Topkick, grossing just under 30,000 lbs at 65 mph. On one trip we were trying to play catch up and I pushed it to 70-75, the truck got real thirsty, only about 6 mpg.

07 Dodge 3500 4 door 4WD dually with 5.9 Cummins automatic pulling 3 horse Cherokee Super Chief 10 ft shortwall, 85 gallon fuel, 55 gallons water etc combined weight 22,000. Between 11.5 and 13.0 depending on hills, wind, and speed (65mph V 75mph)
The 5.9 Cummins seems to do really well on mileage.

With a 38' Platunum LQ trailer and total weight at about 23,000 We have averaged just short of 12mpg in the last 25,000 miles of loaded towing.   I have a 2004 Dodge 3500 dually 6 speed 4x4.  Although the truck has been modified some from stock.  I am in the North West so there is quite a few hard mountain passes we travel over.   You should scale your rig, that would be more of a apples to apples compairson.

I find wind resistance is way more of a factor than weight. I have pulled two similar Logan Coach 4H trailers.

One with a LQ and loaded with 4 horse, tack, hay, water and riders, Scaled at 16,000 for the trailer and 8,200 for the truck and got 12.0 mpg driving Salt Lake City to Yellowstone park and back.  Same F350 truck hauling a Empty Logan Coach 4H with no LQ, trailer weighs 6,000lbs and the 8,200 lb truck back from Boise Id to SLC and got 12.5 mpg. That .5 mpg improvment for having 10,000 lbs less of weight on the truck. But having almost the exact same frontal area and turning the same 4 tires.

I pulled a 5th wheel travel trail up to North Dakota and got 10.0 mpg going up, return trip with same trailer was into a head wind and my mileage dropped to 7.0 mpg.

If you are comparing apples to apples, Look at trailers in the same size, is it 7' tall or 7'6" tall, 7' wide or 8' wide, with or with out hay racks, Does it have an awning or not.  Just how much wind drag does your trailer create. It's not all about the weight.

PH I think you are right on,i will not put a rack on top for that reason,we do have an awning my hart is only 7 tall and 7.5 wide and i get the same mileage as i did with the sooner with small lq ,rack and all and i wasn;t weighing nothing compared to now, wind makes a lot of difference also when you pull, number one you don't buy these big one tons and big motors for fuel economy, those that do are dreamin/////

MPG was not high on my list when I picked a truck. Can it pull (and stop) the load safely? Is it enough truck to not be torn up by the job I am going to ask it to do? Stability? (needed dually as we had truck camper at the time, but now glad I have dually for the LQ)

But, our previous truck was a Chevy 1 ton with a 454, and it got 5 to 6 MPG.... so getting 10+ is a bonus with current truck

I couldn't agree more. When I get asked what my truck gets for MPG, I usually respond, "Doesn't matter, it's what I need to handle the trailer"

Two identical rigs, two different drivers = different mileages. Two identical rigs, same driving techniques, different terrain = different mileages. Variable truck options = different mileages. Different brands of trucks = different mileages.

There are too many variables, to accurately determine what mileage another rig and driver can expect within his travels.

I have an 2002 GMC 3/4 ton duramax diesel 6.7L engine with short bed, extended cab. 4x4.  I tow a 2-horse slant gooseneck, all aluminum, hayrack with H2o tank in it. It is 7' tall and 6'11" wide. Floor length is 14.5'. I tow at 60-65MPH on the highway. No awning or anything else hanging from it. My horses are big at 16H. I got 12-13 MPG but that was when My injectors were bad. Curious to see what it will be at this summer now that i had all my injectors replaced.
