My sister and I went in together for a vintage horse trailer last week with the intent of "fixin' her up."

There was no title or registration and it has no VIN.

After searching the internet to determine its make/model/year, we are thinking it is likely a Hale made in the 1950's or late 1940's but never found another trailer like it so make/model/year is still a mystery.

It has tons of personality and has obviously lived it's life here in Southern Arizona, due to minimal surface rust in places.

We want to restore it to usable condition and have been pricing costs of sand blasting/painting and wood deck/side panel wood replacement then have any electrical and mechanical/brake issues dealt with.

It is an open top with forward wind block, two horse, single axle, direct load.

We have a older but powerful Ford F-150 4X4 pickup truck which towed it home with no problems.

Here is a picture I just put into an album here of it...

I don't know how, or if it is allowed/possible, to embed photos in a comment directly.

Any help or information is greatly appreciated.

I have more photos of it if needed. The above picture does not show the fender which is heavy diamond plate with a running board fore and aft of the wheel.

The trail hitch latch looks like a rocket plane hood ornament which I did find a picture of on the internet but without any identity as to Maker. argh...

Hi Cutter!

I will do that. Happy you find the project of interest.

I have numerous other 'before' pics but I have to shrink the file size on them manually from 2meg down below 100k so they will upload here.

We are excited about this project and will try to do as much as we are personally able to do.

The side wooden panels go on from the inside and each side is held on by a dozen or so bolts and are weather proof plywood. Most likely they are marine grade or something.

We are going to borrow a grinder tool and try and see if we can grind off the nuts holding the two plywood panels in place tomorrow to get the bolts out and the panels off. The panels are so weathered we want to replace them but they are still viable.

We can rent a sand blaster by the day for $66 a day to strip the metal.

I have done tons of furniture refinishing so am not much daunted by the project except any heavy lifting that may be required. Moving it is a real struggle but together we managed to get it into a garage after we picked it up. It had been sitting unused for over 5 years in a lot out in the desert.

Neither one of us are very strong but we have determination.

Hey Retento,

After studying the html source code of your comment with the image of my trailer I believe I have a method of embedding photos here.

Hi Hgut,

Our thinking is preservation as close as feasible to when it was built.

It's forward metal wind screen covers the top of the forward feeding loft and
the traveling horses heads.

This being southern Arizona, rain/snow/cold is not an issue but air circulation due to heat is an issue.

Thank you for the interest in the project. :-)

We got the trailer stripped of all the old wood including the floor boards as of yesterday. Thankfully got some strong guys to help out removing all the bolts. lot of hammer and chisel work.

Kept the two side panels to use as templates for the replacement panels.
Thinking of going with a Woody look on the outside with nice UV resistant marine varnish or marine polyurethane finish on the replacement side panels.

Leaf springs on one side has two springs with missing ends towards the rear and had been jury rigged to compensate for it... that will have to get fixed.

I removing all the old wiring but obviously all but the brake wiring was replaced at some point.

We will take it to trailer repair shop to get the spring fixed and the brakes checked and, if necessary, fixed.

Looking at the floor boards which were pried out thus got split, it is a red colored hard wood. Perhaps red oak but looks a lot more like red mahogany.

Not sure what wood was used but it took a beating center rear over time where horses obviously braced with hind hoofs against load shifting inertia due to the trailer being lead though turns and through curves.

I took pictures during the dismantling and will get them posted so folks can see what was going on.

The point of this project is not so much as a money saver as it is to restore a piece of charming horse history with a lot of personality and let continue to be of service.

We consider this trailer to be a very worthwhile rescue.

I caution you if you sandblast  it, it doesn't take much to blast right thru metal of that thickness, especially if you have a little rust..  I sure am interested in your project, so please keep us posted with pictures and story on how its going. I sure agree with you  on the fact that you are restoring a piece of western history. very cool. Anything like that up in this country would have been rusted out long ago..lol

thanks for including this forum in your rebuild...

After we got all the wood removed, it was on to paint removal.

The equipment we borrowed was not up to the job.

The air compressor capacity was not large enough to handle the media blaster and the media blaster was a little one which is probably suitable for small projects.

We used proper protection including hood, breathing protection and the correct gloves.

With the that said, we found an independent media blaster who's bid to proper media blast was well within reason. He now has the trailer and will be finished with it within a few days.

We also found and visited a full service trailer repair shop which can get the rest of the repairs taken care of as to wiring, lights, spring repair, brakes and ensure the trailer/truck combination is working together correctly.

Here is a side shot photo after wood removal and prior to media blasting:

A distinctive feature of the trailer are her fenders/running boards... they are constructed of heavy gauge diamond plate steel and are rock solid and easily supports standing on.

Someone locally commented they had seen such trailers in the service of the Arizona Mounted Rangers back in the day.

Hi Chicory!

The project is about 95% complete and the trailer is looking sweet!

We got the trailer sandblasted & spray painted, and a new electrical harness and lights installed and working. All of the under carriage has been painted with a special frame protection magnetic paint.

The wood floor boards and wood side panels have been replaced.

We also had a wheel with a brake added to bottom of the tongue jack to make it easier for us to move the trailer around.

All in all it is looking really nice!

Will get some pictures of it posted when I can.

Only issue left to solve to pass inspection and get license plates for it is the trailer coupler latch.

A previous owner broke the underneath of the latch for pinning it in the locked position. We are looking into that problem now. Hopefully something can be fabricated to save the vintage latch but we will take it down and have it fixed one way or the other next week.
