Just bought new LQ trailer w/11ft short wall and slide and wondering why they put such large BTU AC units (13,500) in them all. Our last trailer 10ft short wall no slide no AC. We made a panel to fit the sliding window and put in 5,000 BTU window unit when camping. We could run this with our Honda 2000 for 9 hrs at pretty much an idle except for compressor start up which barely rev'ed it for 1-2 seconds. This size AC kept trailer more than cold enough in the hottest weather. But now from what I've read I'll need to get a new generator to run this new AC. I know there's nothing I can do about it just wondering why we need such a large AC in trailers that average 120 square ft.

I think it's probably because that is what size the RV units are, there aren't a lot of options. If you have the Honda EU2000 you can get a second unit and run they in parallel to power the ac, it works very well...that is what we use.

Must not get very hot and humid where you're at!! A 13.5 will just barely keep my 4' insulated gooseneck DR cool when it's 100 outside... That's why most trailers have a 13.5 or two, some may use a single 15.0... Why not go back with your 5000 btu AC, that worked well in the past so you can use the same 2000 genset.....

I'm more suprised that after purchasing a new 11' sw with a slide that it didn't have a generator with it. Figured it would.

I was going to use the 5000 btu when we were camping without power but the window is smaller and the screen is permanently attached so won't work. So will probably get second 2000 watt honda to use with other when we need AC. And we spent a week in Tennessee in July last year around 100 and humid all week and the 5000 kept up just fine. So I guess I'll find out how well the 13,500 does in the new one if it ever warms up here. Maybe the rooftop units aren't as efficient so that's why they are bigger.
