I have a 2002 Ford F250 5.4L gas 4x4 automatic truck that I bought with 4000 miles on it in 2002. It currently has 30,459 miles so clearly I don't drive it much but when I do, I am usually pulling my 24' Kieferbuilt Genesis 2+1 gooseneck trailer. I worry about the transmission. I have the opportunity to trade it in on a 2005 F250 6.0L diesel with a 4 speed manual trans. It has 125k miles and I am told by the dealer that the engine was replaced and has about 50k miles on it. All of the corrections for the 6.0l have been made - studs, EGR delete and the injectors. I drive a manual for my regular car but have never had a truck nor towed a trailer with a manual.Am I crazy for even going there? I know manual transmissions are not popular, especially in trucks, or so it seems. Any thoughts or advice is most welcome!

I would run from the 6.0 I had nothing but trouble out of my 2005 F350 6.0

The 7.3 you have in the 02 and trans is much better then the 05 in my opinion. I finally gave up on my 05 and now I pull my 4H 9.5' LQ with a 2010 Duramax. Best thing I ever did.

First off Ford did not offer a 4 speed manuel after 1990 in light duty trucks so if it does have a 4 speed I would not buy it!However it should have a 6 speed transmission and if they can verify that the delete has been done or check for yourself I would buy it in a heart beat!Lots of people talk dirty about the 6.0's mainly because of "what they have heard"..... Yes, some of them was problems and a lot had to do with owners adding power without upgrading other items which leads to head gasket or head stud problems. I have bought and sold many of these trucks with well over 300-k miles and still running strong! When running right they are way better performance engines than the 7.3's and better fuel mileage too!

not being familiar with truck manual transmissions: it has Reverse (of course), Low, 1, 2,3,4 and D Is that considered a 6 speed trans?

If it is a manual tranny it has the zf6-s750 a great manual tranny, probably the best of the newer 6 speeds, hell, even the auto behind the 6.0L is stellar. The problem is the engine itself, you can find good 6.0L Powerstrokes, but the are quite rare. The dealer usually won't install head studs, they usually put in "upgraded" head bolts, which is not enough seeing as there aren't enough fasteners in the head to begin (with which is why the headgaskets go in the first place). From personal experience if you don't use a 6.0L hard as in working it (not hodrodding like all the diesel tuner #$@*'s do) it is a good truck, but if you only put a few miles on it a year or daily drive it lightly I would pass on it.

What worries do you have about the tranny in the 02? Does your 02 pull the trailer ok now?

My personal opinion is to keep what you have. Twelve years and you only put on 26,000 miles. The dealer wants that truck because he can sell it for a mint! You are only moving up three years newer and ADDING an extra 100,000 miles.

Keep the 02 and drive it until it dies. Even if the transmission goes out, it will still be cheaper to repair or replace than what you pay extra just for the privilege of owning a diesel. Oil and fuel filter changes alone will cost you $200.

Disclaimer: I am a former owner of an 05' F350 with a 6.0 and I had no problems and loved the truck.

Someone was making some big money off of you on service work. If I pay someone to service mine which would be every 10-k on a 6.0 using syn. oil, oil filter and new fuel filter it only cost about $145.00. and using regular oil and filter with 7500 miles services cost me just over a $100.00.....Changing the fuel filter more often and using a fuel treatment on these trucks is the key.... Too much crap in the newer diesel fuel these day!

DO NOT MAKE THE TRADE...this dealer will have your truck sold before you leave the lot...

I wouldn't make the trade. I had a 6.0, not "I heard from someone". it is not a great engine. We had ours buck at 50mph and we had to either rev past it or slow down. Kind of a pain. At 99,000 miles it had a major compression issue and we dumped it. We now have the 6.7, no troubles at all. Keep your truck!

Why do you worry about the transmission?  absent a recent change in performance...

Keep the truck! get the transmission serviced. Fluid & filter change.  The truck you're considering had the engine fail at 75,000 miles ... a significant issue.  bad engine or bad driver ? An unknown I'd pass on.

I have a 2001 gasoline 3500 bought new with just at 41,000 miles today.  It's been great and cost effective towing power.  As yours has been.

I wouldn't trade for the 6.0. I'm not someone who heard from someone else I have a 6.0, despite all of the warnings I bought the 6.0 thinking it won't happen to me and it did. Lots of problems but I bought it cheap enough that even with the money I have put into it I can probably still come out even selling it to the next person that doesn't think it will happen to them. I have a friend that bought the 6.0 new and also has had lots of issues. There is a reason the 6.0's sell for a fraction of the cost of similar pickups of other brands in the same time frame. As someone else said if you trade for the 6.0 the dealer will be thrilled to get it off his lot and even more excited to have a 02 with 30k miles, he will have it sold before sunset.

The gas engine from that year seem to be holding up well. Got a friend with over 200,000 on his with nothing but oil and filter changes. But the 5.4L was considered a little under powered for the Super Duty trucks. If it pulls your trailer OK for the type of driving you do. Keep it. Transmissions are cheaper than diesel engines if you need some work done.If that little 5.4L gas engine is struggling to pull you trailer, Then I would consider upgrading to a diesel engine.

There is a VERY good reason that there at least 8 companies across north america that specialize in converting 6.0 and 6.4 diesel Ford trucks to Cummins engines.. Two of my friends and my sister all suffered after buying Ford diesel pickups,to call those engines a "money pit" would be a gross understatement. Keep what you have, or choose a different brand of Diesel puckup truck.

Ditto the others...........keep what you own.

An automatic transmission results in a smooth towing vehicle, especially if your travels include hills or mountainous areas. Some vehicles that offer optional towing packages, only include an automatic transmission. I would switch the trans fluid to a synthetic, if it already hasn't been changed. The transmission will run cooler and greatly reduce the possibility of a failure. If you drove more miles each year, I would also recommend the transfer case and both axle differentials be flushed and changed as well.

I've had a couple of 6.0 Ford diesels - an '05 F250 supercab that was as good a truck as you could ask for, over 150K miles and it's only issue was a HPOP (under warranty). Then I traded up to an F350 crew cab - it was never as bad as all the horror stories, it's only issue in 100K miles was injectors, but after the second set I decided that was enough for me. If the new motor has all the "bullet proof" upgrades, it's prob'ly a very good truck. But the thing is, these trucks need to be driven regularly, and not just a couple miles down to the feed store once a week. If you don't get good and warmed up and run it a little hard ("drive it like you stole it" is the term you'll see on the diesel forums) it'll lead to injector and/or turbo problems. 25k miles in 10 years doesn't call for a diesel. I drive mine that much in a year, at least 20% of that towing, and I went back to a gas this time (6.0L Chevy). I'd sure stick with the 5.4 if I were you.
