Has anyone stayed at Big Bend State Park in Texas? We are planning a trip during December. I think someone mentioned to me one time that there is a private place near Big Bend. Anyone know anything about that area? I would welcome any information.

Ok my next question is has anyone been to Big Bend? What can we expect? Just a little worried about being that close to the border.

I was interested to what answers you got because we have Big Bend on our bucket list also. I have heard that camping that close to the border is a valid concern. I would like to know how you make out on your trip.Happy Trails

I will let you know how it went. We plan to go during the week of Christmas as that is the time we can get off. I have heard it is beautiful and we should have fun.

Went December 2006. High desert terrain with very few trees or really anything green. Weather is biggest challenge as the temp. can change quickly, went from warm and nice to freezing and windy in about 5 minutes. We camped primitive south of Alpine on the border. Had corrals and water. Have pics but don't know how to post them here. Never felt unsafe as the border crossing here is a mountain and not many live on either side. There is a small town nearby with a restaurant and store.

Did ya'll camp in the state park? I have heard the road back to the camp ground is not the best. Just wondering if that's where ya'll were. I think you used to be able to horse camp in the national park, but don't know if you still can. We were down there about 3 years ago at a private place, didn't have the best riding but it was different from what we usually do. The owner died so don't know if anyone took his place over. We had wonderful weather for Dec. but the night before we got ready to leave a front came thru and it was frigid. So be prepared!

Camped in Big Bend Ranch State Park. Roads were dirt and not the best but not an issue. The nearest town is Presidio and the park welcome center is right out of town where you check in and get info. To be honest we stopped on the way home at Hill Country SP near Bandera and that was a better ride.

We had stopped by the park welcome center to ask about the camping back there and they told us about the road back there. We were going to just drive back and check it out but decided against it when he told us how the roads were. Have talked to people that said you'd better have an extra spare for the trailer. But sounded like a neat place to camp. We have been to the Hill Country Natural Area for several years and really enjoy it. It's a lot closer to home too, lol.
