We are in the process of buying a fifth wheel trailer.I need to keep the ball foor the horse trailer and do not want to be switching hitches all the time even though we have reese 10 bolt surface rails and the connect/fdisconnect wouldnt be all that hard.It the 160 # hitch thats hard! I am considering haveing the new trailer equipped with a reese goose box which is air bag dampened and converts the pin box to a goose neck configuration. This setup IS approved and endorsed by Lippert Mfg that builds 80% of the fifth wheel frames and will actually be an oem option later this year.Has anyone here towed with one of these and what were your experiences?

if it is the horse trailer your converting to a king pin, just go to your local dealer and buy a new tube for the trailer, you can do the reverse and also convert a king pin on a travel trailer to a ball. For me I would rather have the ball.

This is a replacement pin box for the fifth wheel to change it to a gooseneck ball coupler, like the horse trailer is.

My opinion the gooseneck setup is much better than the 5th wheel type. Mainly because when you need to go a little off the main road and stuff starts to twist the ball is more forgiving than the 5th wheel is. I have bought an sold a number of 5th wheel RV trailer that have been converted to gooseneck hitches and actually I think the 5th wheel trailers are easier to sell like this.

I see a lot of fifth wheel campers around here that are now goosenecks. Pop up makes an adapter that goes on in a couple of hours. And like HTB says, gives a better ability for uneven ground. Not to mention you only have a ball in the bed of the truck.

We bought a new Montana 39' fifth wheel last year. We also have GN horse trailers. I HATE the king pin hookup and never felt comfortable doing it myself. So, we called the factory to inquire if it would void the warranty to change it to GN. The only GN adapter that would not void it was the Reese Air Goose Box. We ordered it in, changed them out, and have been very happy campers ever since! No more changing out hitches on the trucks.
