We've been blowing tires on the 6H trailer. Repair shop says axels are shot. If we upgrade from 2-7k axels to 2-9k and bigger tire, do you think this would help? We haul full loads, many miles, and tons of equipment so we are stacked full.

What does your trailer weigh when it's loaded? have you weighed it?

If you are over 7,000 per axle, Then YES you should upgrade.

Bent axles will eat tires. So if your axles are bad, You will ruin new tires very quickly.

If you are over weight, You will just bend or damage the new axles you put on. If your weight is in line with the axle ratings, Then you can probably just replace with the same rated axles and just fix the bent axle problem.

So what does your trailer actually show for axle weights when fully loaded?

If the tires are "blowing up" it's because of overheating. This can be a result of under inflation or over loading. As was stated, you will need accurate axle weighting, to determine if the problem is due to excessive weights. You didn't mention the type of tires you were using. Brand name tires will beat any Chinese labels hands down in durability. You will need to have tires with the appropriate load rating, for the best wear and durability.

Length of trailer, width of trailer. All of these things matter. Also what kind of speeds do you travel at. Upgrading to a 17.5 tire from a 16 inch, will downgrade you in speed rating. 16 inch tires are 75 MPH rating. 17.5 tires are 62 MPH speed rating. I have been in trailer buisness for 35 years. Upgrade would be to the 8k-9k axles, and go with 19.5 tires and wheels, that gives you the speed rating, and capacity speed wise and load wise. There are a few options, if you have any questions you can call, 817-565-9480 Kyle Zanetti Trailers

Many trailers run ST rated tires which are good for 62-68 mph. Wouldn't it be better to run LT truck tires instead? Sounds like theres a lot of issues here that need addressed. Good luck. Let us know how you resolve this problem. It may help others.

Thought you may want to check this out...As mentioned bye kzanetti the 19.5's maybe the way to go as they offer a higher weight rating along with a higher speed rating of 81 miles an hour. I just put a set on a 24' stock trailer from www.boarwheel.com. We also haul completely loaded the majority of the time. We've had them on a couple months now and have been impressed thus-far.

Thank for the Boarwheel info. Can buy a 19.5 tire and wheel for about the same price as a Goodyear G614 RST lr-G . Might just swap out a set on the 6 horse head to head next time around, could stand a little more tire when hauling 8 horses.

we were also blowing 2 tires on every long haul (new or not) with 7000 lbs axles..on a 4 horse LQ trailer. Went to 9000 lbs axles and haven't blown one yet on 4 long hauls. IMO, they handle the weight better. Good luck, it's not fun changing tires or waiting for someone else to come change a tire..

Hope you don't mind me asking but, were you blowing tires in the same hole on the trailer or different places?  And does your LQ have air ride?  The reason I ask is we've got a 4H LQ with air ride and recently blew 3 tires out (all 3 were in the same spot) on a long haul.  We know of a guy with a similar size Sooner who's blown 12 tires out in the same exact spot since he's owned it.  Just trying to find any information, suggestions and (hopefully) a solution to this newfound problem.  TIA!

. I am going to guess it's blowing the right rear.... Air bag is probably over loading that tire trying to keep trailer level. Your trailer may be riding too high in the front, should be near level or maybe an inch high. Easy to overload a torsion/air bag rear trailer axle. .
