Subject: DEF and shelf life

Hi. have a question on DEF and letting the truck sit unused for periods of months. Currently have a 2007 Dodge Dually -does not use DEF. the truck is used strictly for pulling living quarter trailer for shows from April to November. and it may sit for two/three weeks in between. It is stored inside for the other four months of non use.
considering purchasing a newer 2015 which will use DEF. A Chevy salesperson mentioned issues with trucks siting for two/three weeks ( not used as a daily driver), says the DEF goes 'bad' and the truck will not run properly. He mentioned worse case is sitting out side on driveway in hot climate the worst case. Anyone have knowledge or can comment please? thanks.

DEF just doesn't go bad over time. For it to go bad a couple things have to happen. The first is contamination anything other the DEF such as dirt or fuel. The other is temperature it has to get above 120 degrees for an extended period of time.

Q: Are there special storage requirements for DEF?A: DEF should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight. Ideal storage temperature is up to 77 deg F (25 deg C), temporary exposure to higher temperatures has little to no impact on the quality of DEF.Q: What is the shelf life of DEF?A: The shelf life of DEF depends on ambient storage temperature. DEF will degrade over time depending on temperature and exposure to sunlight. Expectations for shelf life as defined by ISO Spec 22241-3 are the minimum expectations for shelf life when stored at constant temperatures. If stored between 10 and 90 deg F, shelf life will easily be one year. If the maximum temperature does not exceed approximately 75 deg F for an extended period of time, the shelf life will be two years.Q: What impact will exposure to high temperatures for an extended period of time have on DEF?A: While DEF exposure to constant, high storage temperature may have some impact on shelf life, This should not concern operators. Extensive testing in very hot climates has been conducted confirming that DEF stored at a constant temperature of 95 deg F had a shelf life of over 6 months. http://www.noxblue.com/what-is-def/

I have had my 2013 RAM 3500 since new. It only tows the trailer and sits for MONTHS at a time. I have had no issues with the DEF at all so far. I would say dont worry about it.

(Disclaimer- I am not mechanically inclined) ) One opinion from 1st hand experience w/ 2011 Chevy 3500 Duramax Dually which has been a low mileage vehicle used for pulling trailer. No problems from Aug. 2011- March 2014. Then the dreaded "poor exhaust fluid quality" message came on. It was at a dealership 8x for DEF problems until Feb. 2015. GM issued service bulletin in Jan. for the Nox sensors and ours were both replaced in Feb. after a fight w/ GM customer service. DEF tank was replaced in 2014. Truck only serviced by Chevy and only their approved DEF fluid. Dealership we are now using said there is a shelf life and they see the "poor DEF" problem more commonly with inconsistent lower mileage drivers because DEF isn't getting used up. I would say I am impressed that the salesman who wants to sell you a vehicle gave you this advice. We had considered losing $$ and getting a new one but were advised by a private diesel mechanic that the DEF system bugs are not worked out yet in any of the brands. The big down side to having DEF problems is going into limp mode. On the Chevy diesel forum there is a call out for 2011 Chevy's with DEF problems. I noticed a few posts re: newer models w/ same problem. If you like your 2007 Dodge, please do your research before getting rid of it too soon. Paulette
