My awning is 8 yrs. old and needs new fabric. It's somehow attached to the aluminum awning shield, so I assume that will need to be replaced as well? But do I really need to get the shield? I admit it looks very nice, but does it really protect the awning? 7 or 8 years seems to be the normal lifespan of awnings no matter what.Opinions? Thanks!

I have had both with and without. Once when having mine replaced they told me I could reuse that piece and when I picked it up they had not. And like you it didn't add or subtract from the life of the material. My parents had it added because when packed at home the squirrels would chew the fabric. So it did take care of their problem

That weather shield seems to protect the awning from birds perching directly on the awning with those sharp claws. They seem to slip and slide on the aluminum shield and that prevents them from using it for a place to, "do, do" they're business!
