Does anyone know of any nice horse camps with access to the Va Creeper Trail? Any comments on the trail are welcome also. I hear it is a nice ride. I have done the New River Trail which is also a previous RR track and it is a blast for gaited horses. I have heard that the Va Creeper is like that just with better views.

THanks

Can you just ride anywhere on the New River Trail?  Is the same as the greenbrier river trail?  One of them was advertising a week long 'led' ride, I forget which one.  The creeper trail goes over towards Mt Rodgers?  Going to Mt Rodgers in May.  I have never been and it is one of the closest places to me.  I ride a lot in Rockingham Co Va

The New River Trail runs along the New River from Galax to Pulaski. I think the best place to unload horses is the State Park at Fosters Falls which is about half way. The trail is about 57 miles long. The sections that I have ridden are very flat - great for gaited horses. We are in NC and about 1 1/2 hours away from Fosters Falls.

Wendy, have you checked out the VA Grayson Highlands state park that borders the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. We camped on the west end of Mount Rogers at a private campgrund, but took a truck ride to check out the state campgrounds,,,excellent facilities and the riding from there is fantastic up in the Mount Rogers Area. Purchase National Geographic map #786 of this area. It shows all the trails including the VA Creeper.

This park does not have access to the Virginia creeper but it is a great place to camp and the trails from there are really scenic. Up in the Mount Rogers area there are herds of wild ponys and this is one of the highest areas on the east coast and there are a couple of wilderness areas including Lewis Fork and Little Wilson Creek.

Check out www.gafoxtrotters.com for some pics of the campground and trails there.

Hi... I am going to be moving to Greene County this fall and looking for someplace to board my horse that has access to nice trails. I have a 21 year old quarter horse gelding. He has been at a hunter/jumper barn for the past 13 years.. but my daughter is gone to college. so he is mine now. Do you have any suggestions?

Sure wish you ladies lived closer to Galax. I have been looking for a riding buddy since I moved up here 6 years ago. Have friends that come up one week during June to go camping and riding with me other than that my poor horses stay in the pasture. Hubby want let me go alone any more since I am retired and things can happen when you are along on a trail. Any one near Galax interested in trail riding?

Toranda, have you thought about joining a riding club?  Our club has many married couples ( and single people, young and in the 70's)where only one person rides, many are women. They go on day rides and camping rides.  Everyone takes care of the other, we have great times together. You live in an area that is close to hundreds of miles of trails. Hussey mountain, Mount Rogers, New river Trail, Va. Creeper Trail, Grayson Highlands and Dismal. These are all in southwestern Va.

Black's Fort Inn is at the Va, Creeper trail. wesite is

http://www.blacksfortinn.com/?Source=TravelingHorse  You can camp  with your trailer there or rent a cabin. This is a very popular biking trail. More popular than New River Trail. GreenBriar trail is in west Va. We go to Caldwell to ride it. There are several horse camps along it, Most are primitive.

Thanks for the suggestions on clubs and I did join one. They are nice people but are not looking to have get togethers or trail rides. Just work on the trails which I think is great but I was looking for more. Where I came from, S.C., we not only adopted a state park to work on trails but we had trail rides, camp outs, as well as informative club meetings on all aspects of horse health care down to different riding styles and everything in between. Don't get me wrong I'm all for working to keep the trails clean, repaired, and open to all riders but there is more to a club than just that. Guess I will keep looking and try to talk my hubby into letting me go alone.
