I'm hoping some of you can help me come up with a solution to a problem I have with birds getting into my barn underneath the metal ridge cap. Starlings have pecked out the dense foam material under the ridge cap so they can gain access between the roof metal and fiber glass insulation where they nest. Have any of you found a solution to this problem?

I don.t know what type of metal roof you have, but in my case I installed a metal closure strip which was formed to match the ridges and valleys of the roof panel. Problem solved and relatively easy to do

Thank you for your reply. My roof is the older kind of ribbed steel that has ribs about every 8 inches. I'm willing to have a new ridge cap put on and would be willing to try to find someone who would build a metal closure strip as you have done.

Thanks, PonyTammy. We did use the pipe insulation foam that comes in 6 foot lengths and it did last awhile. Why roofers don't have a great way to
prevent this is beyond reason. There must be thousands of use with the
same problem.

There is a product available at most big box stores called "COBRA". It is similar to the various non woven "Scotch" brand scrubbing products. It is more resistant to damage than the foam products. It is installed under the ridge vent, over the metal sheathing, and still allows airflow to vent the roof's peak area. The ridge vent is removed, the Cobra is cut and applied on the peak, and the ridge vent is reinstalled over the product.

I know it sounds tacky, but if you can hang 36" lengths of surveyors tape, doubled in half, so two ends hang into the breeze/wind, the birds will not go near it. I think they see it as snakes. It works great for us.
