Is there a formula I can use to figure the actual weight in the truck for a goose neck rig? I have a 1/2 ton nissan titan and want to pull goose neck. Wondering what I can carry/ pull.

There are two numbers you can use to get close.1. The Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating or GCVWR This is the total allowed weight of your loaded truck & trailer combined.2. The payload of your truck minus weight of any options, passengers or cargo. This is your maximum hitch weight allowed. Finally ... you may "guestimate" that the hitch load of a GN is 20% of the loaded weight of the trailer. Only a scale will be accurate. not manufactures shipping weights, registered, or such.

Your owners manual will give you a max load (payload is inside the bed) but to find out what the trailer does you can use 20%-25% of the trailer weight OR, the best method, you can hit your local truck stop and use the scales to find the actual weight. Finding the actual weight can be a fun math adventure but remember if you change the load in either the truck or trailer you may find that your actual numbers change rapidly and what was marginally safe before is now not at highway speeds. It's not that your truck can't move the weight, it's the stopping that usually causes the most grief!

The pin weights of a GN trailer can vary greatly, manufacturer to manufacturer and even models within the same brand. The length of the trailer, the placement of the axles, the interior furnishings, the number of horses, the equipment being carried, all will affect the hitch weight. As was posted, some can be 20% of the trailer's weight, others can be as high as ~40%. There is no accurate formula.

FWIW, the new 2016 Nissan lineup will have a 1/2 ton cummins diesel engine option. This new engine option comes standard with a gooseneck ball in the bed. It should be somewhere in the 1/2-3/4 ton tow capacity range but real numbers have been hard to pin down exactly.
