for no  more than it cost go to either a 550 Ford or the 5500 Dodge, there  is a huge difference on rear end size, frame, etc. I have a  2008 Ford 550 and a 2010 Dodge 3500  at the moment and I like both, but in my area the Dodge dealers are all gone and only Ford remains so that is what I would pick. Be carefull on what rear end gears are in either one of them they both offer several and what is better in the mountains will not get all that good a mileage if that is something you are looking at.

I have a 5500 Dodge, 4x4, 4:88 rear end, automatic. I pull a 6-horse trailer with 16' living quarters. Seems to handle trailer OK.

I have a 2007 Ford F450 with a 6.0, 5 speed Auto and a 4:30 gear. It pulls real good and so far my only complaint would be the truck needs air ride if you are going to drive it without a trailer on, the ride is very stiff empty.

My own preference would be for the Dodge, just because of the proven Cummins engine. HOWEVER it should depend on the dealer that will work with you and support your purchase. IF your ford dealer has a commercial department and knows how to handle the larger trucks this would be a point in their corner. Dodge-Ram is really going after the 4500=5500 market is is very competitive price wise. As far as the warranty support my expirence would tell me that Dodge handles that better than ford.. IMHO.

You may want to consider fuel mileage.  We have a 08 Ford 450 4x4, towing we only average about 7.5 mpg.  We have a 3 horse with 14' living quarters plus midtack.  With 3 horses on the combined weight of the truck and trailer is 26,500.  We also have a 25' gooseneck equipment trailer and a Featherlite gooseneck stock trailer, loaded or empty we still only average between 7.2 and 8.0 mpg.

Not really what you asked, but if a class 3 dually won't cut it I would go with a class 8 tractor conversion.

Have a good friend that had a 07 Ford F550...hated it. Poor mileage, poor braking. Damn near had to give it away. Moved into FL60 Sportchassis...may have been a '99, but it was low miles. Same mileage, better braking....same money.
