I am needing new tires on my truck, 1 ton Chevy dually. I was told one time to get the next bigger size the next time I got tires but don't remember why they said to do this. Can anyone answer that for me?

If it's a 2001-2007 Chevrolet or GMC dually, the stock 215/85-16 is as wide as you want to go... The next size, 235/85-16's will rub when the truck is loaded. 2000 year model and back had 225/75-16's. Those rims can be fitted with the 235/85-16's with no problem. GM changed the rim offset with the 2001 model. 2008 and newer trucks will have 225/75-17's... I'm not sure what the rim offset is on these trucks. Does your truck have the factory steel wheels? What year is your truck?

I run 215/85-16, Michelin LTX M/S lrE tires on my 2001 Chevrolet dually.

It's a 2008. Also forgot to say it's also 4 wheel drive, if that makes a difference. It came with General Grabber TRs on it. LT225/75R17. They aren't smooth yet but close and I don't have but 32,000 miles on it, seems they should hold up better than that.

A friend of mine out in Tn. put a set of LT235/80R-17 Toyo Open Country A/T's on her 2008, 3500 dually and they touch. She hauls a 3 horse Featherlite LQ trailer all over and has not had any trouble...Yet.... The truck has a chip/programmer so it was easy to reset the transmission shift points and recalibrate the speedometer. Truck looks really good except for the sidewalls touching at the bottom.

Her tire... http://www.tiresdirect.net/TOYO_Open_Country_AT_LT235_80R_P2030C174.cfm?UserID=2002508&jsessionid=ea309d2f719b284d763c

Good info on GM trucks... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php

On our 05 ford dually we went one size narrower because it saved us about $75 a tire.

Retento....Does it hurt if the dual wheels touch?  Such as will it wear the sidewalls or cause a blowout if hot?  Thanks, I know it's a little off the subject.

The tire sidewalls should not touch. It's not like they are turning at different speeds rubbing against each other... They are just pushing against each other where they bulge at the bottom...

A thread on dual wheels touching.. Don't let it confuse you.. The dual wheels should not touch.

This 235 tire is too close and will rub/touch when the truck is loaded... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37079&d=1175833972

Our Dodge HAD Generals and at 30-k one came apart warranty replaced it, at 36- another came apart warranty was going to replace it and I repalce ALL 6 with Hankook tires, this is the 2nd truck that I have replaced with Hankook and have have really good luck out of them.  First truck I put almost 60-k on them before I replaced them.  But I rotate them evey 10-k miles!

I ended up going with Michelin LT235/80R-17 M/S. They have a 60,000 mile warranty on them so sure hope they last that long. Sure hurt the old check book.

The key to the 60-k warranty is keep the air checked and keep them rotated.

Good timing for this discussion. My 04 Dodge 3500 SWR is on it's second set of Goodrich rugged trail t/a. These are the original size(265/70R17) and brand that came with the truck. I put 65K on the first set and have 67K on the second. I don't haul often and at $200 each would like to find a comparable wearing tire at less $$$. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

Check over here for a wide varity of selections, prices and reviews...  http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?width=265%2F&ratio=70&diameter=17&x=67&y=7

Sound like you can't go wrong with going back with the same tire.
