Hello, I am planning to move to the USA soon and I was wondering if it would be possible at all to bring my lovely horse trailer from the UK to USA. Anyone any idea or experience? Is the bumper pull system in the US the same as in Europe? I am looking forward to hearing any ideas, infos or advise!Thanks, Anja

You would have to make sure it meets all the legal/DOT requirements. It also depends what kind of vehicle you are going to get in the US (a bigger vehicle will give you more options). It might be cheaper to sell our trailer and get a new/used one over here.

BaskinBay, That's like bringing coals to Newcastle! Just joking, but seriously, we have so many trailers in the US. Check out the HTW ads and see if there is a comparable trailer or even one that you might prefer. If you will be purchasing a pick up truck in the US to tow with, you will have more trailer options to explore. Also, even if you shipped your trailer to the US, in the event that you later decided to purchase a different trailer, selling an unfamiliar brand of trailer in the US might result in not being able to get the full resale value out of your old trailer.

Not that it's any of my business, but wouldn't shipping your trailer be expensive? Could you sell your trailer and take that money plus the money you would have spent on shipping and buy a comparable trailer in the US? About your bumper pull hitch, I would think you might find a picture on the sale page and compare? Other than that, I have no other suggestions.
I think our Department of Transportation is DOT.gov. I could be wrong on that.
Good luck to you! :-}

Contact Atlantic Container Line (ACL - HOME)(I don't know if this link will work). They have roll-on, roll-off (RORO) ships from England to the US. They will be able to give you shipping dates and costs. They can also tell you who to talk to about meeting US DOT legal requirements (you don't have to worry about emissions like you do with a car). They can also tell you and will help you complete the documents needed to export the vehicle from England and to import it into the US. I would also explore importing and shipping to Canada, and then into the US. Because Canada is a Commonwealth nation, sometimes that's easier.

Best of luck,

Hi all, thanks for your suggestions! My plan was to sell my trailer here and buy a new one in the US, but believe it or not, trailers are twice as much in the US compared to the UK and my trailer is a side loader with horses traveling backwards haven't found anything like this yet. So I just thought I check out all my options. Thanks, Anja

Suggest you look at a currency converter before deciding what to do as the basic Equi-trek at 4,999L would be about 8,155 USD

Hi BaskinBay1--I'm moving back to the states after three years in England. I like the trailers in England much better than in the states--more options and they are much lighter! Did you ever import a trailer?

Who knows...maybe your UK trailer will be a hit in the colonies and you can sell it for a lot of money and by a fancy new trailer. Good luck.

hehe--except the European trailers are better! You can get decked out living quarters trailers and still pull with a smaller truck...and get great results at the fuel pump!
