Looking at a 4H Featherlite that was converted to a 3H b/c they put in LQ. Has anyone ever installed an escape door in the first horse stall? I show and haul lots of extras in the first stall and we like to unload some of our stuff before we unload horses, so need the escape door. My husband is an excellent welder/fabricator, wondering if anyone has ever added one or had a dealer add one. Costs, time involved, can you buy an escape door or do you have to make one? Any input would help.

Can you call Featherlite and possibly speak to one of their engineers? I would think they could tell you the ins and outs of installing an escape door. They would have all the technical information.

Installing a new exterior door, involves restructuring the wall to support the new door and missing studs. It does take welding skills, a mechanical knowledge and access to like materials. I've read where people have installed household type prehung doors on interior bulkheads. The escape doors are located within a supporting structure, which would require the wall to be properly remanufactured. As was previously stated, contacting the manufacturer, may produce a "kit" it uses when a door is optioned when new. With his skills, materials and templates, your husband may be able to duplicate the factory installation.

thanks for the info. I will try to call featherlite and see what they say. It may just not be cost effective to do it. My husband has a welding shop and is an excellent fabricator so I am sure he could do it if its possible. I wondering if the time and effort is worth it or should we keep looking for a different trailer. I was thinking since it has a large drop down window in that stall already that is a good start to a hole for a door, but I'm not the welder
