I'll be upgrading from 2h weekender to full LQ. My big guy squeezes into 2nd stall, but doesn't really eat hay, compared to previous nice big straight load BP. And of course I want him to be a happy camper. I've searched and found a few threads, but am looking for more input/experience.I am a trail rider, so would like to keep trailer no more than 30' overall to be able to access the more remote trail heads. Also, 8' wide trailer w mangers? Seem to me stalls would be same size as 7' wide with no mangers? Thanks so much for your help with this weighty decision!!

the stall slant angle can make the stalls longer or shorter, but it can also ad length to the trailer to accommodate the slants. The mangers can be deep or shallow so an 8 wide with mangers can be bigger if the manges are less than 1ft deep. Also the horse will put its head over the manger and have the space over the manger that wouldn't be in a 7 wide. I recommend that you get with a trailer dealer or manufacture and talk about custom options to suit you and your horse. that's what i did and it was money well spent to get exactly what i wanted and needed.

I didn't realize that there are different size mangers! I am beginning to realize that I need to load him into a friends 8' trailer and take him for a ride ?? I am hoping to find a quality, used trailer, but may be searching for a unicorn! Thank you for your input!

Another thing to consider is go with a 3 horse slant and let your horse use two stalls. A 3 horse will have better resale than a 2 horse and I have never heard anyone complain about having too much room. Another option would be a stock combo.

You can find a 2H straight LQ trailer. I just found 20 on this site alone. If you know your horse fits better in a straight then find one with the LQ you like. Let's be honest about the 3H slant...the first stall is going to be storage, the 2nd is the biggest horse and the last stall is for the other horse. Giving a horse the 2nd and 3rd slot is OK but if your horse likes to unload the minute the doors open he/she will have room to set back, break the lead snap, flip out of the back of the trailer and guess where you'll be standing? A stock combo gives you the most flexibility in resale value and you can use the first "box" as storage for longer camping supplies. I recently purchased a stock combo with a ramp into the front "box" so that I can load and unload each "box" independently. Both boxes can also serve as a temporary stall if needed. Go with your gut and make sure your horse fits the trailer before you make this purchase.

I hadn't really considered a stock because most are 7'. My horse is a 16.3 big boned Missouri Fox Trotter = high head carriage. Are there 7'6" stock ? I am trying to avoid cost of a new/special order. However, as you all have mentioned , it may turn out to be $ well spent. My non-horsey hubby has informed me that this will be my last trailer ?? So get exactly what I want! I am hoping for under $30k, a quality newer than approx 2005, it's becoming apparent that that may be a pipe dream?!

trailers can be customized and built to order. where i got my trailer they will make any trailer 8ft tall and they will accommodate your personal needs. im short so they made the latches and hold backs and horse ties where i can reach them.

Ok- so now you all have me looking at stock trailers as a possibility. I had not considered the additional potential buyer in the "other" livestock community when someday it comes time to sell ??My question is- and I know that there are many opinions and thoughts on this, to tie or not to tie when traveling in the stock trailer? It's good to give him the option to move as he needs to. However I like the security of padded dividers for safety sake - kind of like a car seat so that he's not a projectile. Also, since 98% of the time I'd be hauling just one horse, what size stock with a separate tack/hay area would you all recommend?

I like the flexibility of the stock, I find that 8' sections are plenty for even large horses or mares and foals. I have loose tied adult horses and let the foals move around. Never found a horse that got slammed around badly but accidents happen and in a stock you'd have the ability to cut the side open and get your horse out without it being trapped by a divider. You can find any array of storage areas, even another 8' section in a 16' stock area. I've seen them as small as 4' and with a ramp out the side you can walk in and out for loading or just roll things up and in on a dolly/hand truck. Stock trailers w/LQ's are a very fast growing segment of the trailer market. Mine does not have a LQ but I did design it so that no matter what my kid asks to show at the livestock show the next year this trailer can handle it! https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=B863517A4B1B1C3B!352&authkey=!...
