With all the nasty weather going on, I find myself longing for spring and some riding/camping weekends.   We have already reserved sites at Red Hill in eastern KY for Memorial weekend.

What warm destinations are you dreaming of?

RIDE ON!

I'm having riding withdrawals too. We're planning on riding in Shawnee in March or April and maybe going down in Arkansas to Pine Grove trails in May. Haven't decided on the summer yet. Kind of wanting to try Colorado but with all the snow they've had it will probably have to be late summer.

Debbie - I'm not exactly sure where Campton KY is but there is definitely good riding in the eastern part of the state.  Lots of good climbing hills and usually plenty of creeks to cross.  Have fun!

RIDE ON!

Jan, I'm so sorry about Peachs.  I'm sure it was hard for you guys.  Was she old?  No matter, whatever age they are, it just plain sucks.  Nancy

Jan, off topic.

There's an article in this months Western horseman about pre-purchase exams.  Dr. Murray is featured in the article.  He's a good guy!

Hi there, just wanted to chime in on Mingsville Horse Camp in case you haven't been there. The campground, stall facilities, and hosts are very accomodating. We rode there April 2006. The dogwoods were beautiful! However, the downside to the campground is there are very few trails and some are closed due to cattle grazing. The website is a bit mis-leading in stating that it joins Mark Twain National Forest. It does, but there are no accessible horse trails. We rode the entire camps trails in a day and a half. About 9-10 hours total. There was also lots of old cars and equipment (tractors, farm equipment, and even a bull dozer!) along the trails. So if you are looking for a weekend getaway this place would be fine. But if you are looking for a longer natural type trail ride I would plan on staying here a few days then move on to Golden Hills, Big Creek or further west to Ponderosa trails.

Happy Trails.

Thanks for the info on Mingsville. There is a bunch of gaited horse people planning on this trip. Their site says "access" to the Mark Twain Nat'l Forest. Did you say that there is none?

We are also planning a trip the end of April to eastern KY, at the Lazy GAit Horse Camp. Looking forward to the start of the riding season big time. Major Cabin Fever here!

Judy

Nancy, I'll get a copy of the mag.  Dr. Murray surely did fix up "Prissy"  when the only other alternative was to put her down.  No one would ever know now how dire her situation was.  She has also turned into a gaiting tank...just point her and she is going.

And now some more off off off topic:  Storm Cloud is ready to go!  Anyone want a true single footing colt, here he is.

Back to camping....probably going to go to Many Cedars at Hohenwald, TN for a short trip as soon as the forecast is for a couple of 50 degree days.  I am such a wuss!

Rose, My condolences on losing Peaches. It's tough when a loved one crosses the rainbow bridge.

We are planning a trip to Lazy Gaits in Carter KY in April. Sounds like a good place to go to break out of the winter blahs. The owner says they have 40+ miles of trails on their property and access to Carter Caves State Park.

That is correct. There are no horse trails leading from Mingsville Camp into Mark Twain National forest. The forest adjoins their property, but there are no trails and the forest area is dense so can't really wander around. Also, you cannot cross the river. Just ride beside for a few hundred yards. This is where the bull dozer sits.... stuck along the river. The property on the other side was private and did not allow horses. The trails there will be good for gaited horses, but I'm sure you'll be able to cover the entire area in two days. We had QHs last Spring and switched over to MFTs this fall. Sure is nice going at a faster walk and covering more ground in an easy going manner.

I got the camping fever here too! My husband had to go over the pass Hwy 88 yesterday to get to Reno, for job, and he said there is maybe 2 ft. of snow on the sides of the road, and Kirkwood ski resort is showing rocks big time! So maybe an early season for me, bad for us for feed, but good riding summer!
