Wife and I went to dinner and on way home checked on our pasture horses. My 20 year old 16hh Chestnut Roan Walking horse gelding I've had 17 years was DEAD at the stock tank.He was electricuted this morning some time. The is the second season for the heater. Its in good shape from looking at it.Wiring etc.He was piled up on the side of the 150 gallon rubber tank and had shifted it about 6 inches when he fell.A neighbor said he saw the horses(7 in 20 plus acres)come down to drink mid moring and then they sppoked and ran.Well all BUT ONE.Thats why they ran.He dropped and died.Just got finished about a hour ago with a back hoe service etc.I'm very sad.Lots of things in my life came and went and hard personal times. But HE never had a issue or injury.Had been in the mountains to the Georgia beaches High headed and a looker with his heavy roan coloring and blonde mane and tail.10 day wagon trains to beating a class of 14 in country pleasure all in the same month!

Save the heater.  If it was shorted to the water it will show.

I'm reminded to change the outlet my heater is on, to a GFCI.  I've been meaning to do that, just never got to it.

I'm fixing to call the stock tank deicer manufacture and Plantion pipeline in the morning. This has tore me up.I lost a old friend for a drink of water. The few  horses I have LOST over the years have always been injured or killed by HUMAN interaction or lack of proper install, maintance etc. This is MY SECOND to die because of electric issues.Had a POWER LINE that was installed in the 60s break and fall in a pasture(broke at a old splice)and a 2 year old stepped on it and dropped him on it.Others did not get hurt because the colt acted as a ground. This pasture I rent from the pipeline company and they installed(or had installed)the water tank, water line and power to it for the express use of livestock. This would not have happened if it had a GFCI. I bet it does NOT as I now remember the power being OFF and float frozen.I got a pipeline worker to unlock the fenced compound and I found the NEW breaker ox with breaker OFF.It was NOT a GFCI breaker now that I know what it looks like and does.I'm just GLAD some of the others did not drink or it could have been worse.Pipeline employee said he saw them come to drink mid Sturday morning and then they spooked and ran.He thought that was odd.Thats when my old friend got killed. The worker was within60 feet of them and never noticed a 16hh horse had just dropped in front and to the side of the stock tank. The guy said CHEZZ I kinda been all near this all day and didn't see or know THAT was lying here with a shocked look on his face. Thanks to you all for info and understanding.

Hounddog, sorry about loosing your best buddy.  I've read all the post on the Dodge forum. THANK's for posting the info. I lease a very old barn for my horses and now I think I need to check the electrical. Bought my first tank heater this year and only use it when forcast calls for below freezing but now I gotta check the old barn wiring. Putting a ground rod in the water tank also sounds like my first project until I can get everything else checked out.  Thanks again and hope the pipe co treats you right.

Had hoped some would read and realize how deadly electricity can be.We all take it for granted. This is my SECOND to die because of electricity in 5 months.First two I've buried in 25 years. The other incident involves a power line.Butthats for another day unless anyone really interested and IT could have been prevented.

You make an excellent point. A couple of years ago a three year old girl in this area was electrocuted by an ungrounded stock tank. I bought a plastic tank the next day.

Sorry for you loss and thank you for the reminder of how important it is to having things safe for our horses.

I recently noticed my horses hesitating to drink water and realized I had a problem.  I found a spot where a horse had chewed on the wire above the area that had protection over the wire.

I bought a new heater but after reading your post we took an old hose a put the whole cord in so none is exposed to the horses.  Also took out my directions and realized we need to ground the tank even when using a floating heater.  I always carry a ground rod in my trailer so it's coming out to use until I can get one for the water tank.

That's a horrible way to loose an animal.  I'm so sorry.

I tried to read the post on the other forum, but it said my IP address had been banned.  I've never been there before, how could I be banned before my first visit?

I quit those electric heaters years ago, I used to run ground fault outlets on them thinking I was safe but after hearing of others losing livestock I went to the local farm store and bought a propane heater and a 100 lb bottle, I light it at first freeze here is Nov - Dec and it last all winter here in the mid west, it did take the mules some getting used to while they was drinking not to run for the hills when it kicked on.

If you use electric heaters make sure they are on a ground fault circuit to protect the horses.
