ive read on here and other forums about horror stories about state troopers pulling over horse trailers, and other people saying its a hoax/rumor started by people who are bored and should be out riding.
my expiriance is real, true, similar and happened this weekend.
last month a had a leaky radiator replaced and my truck inpected, gone through and checked out in anticipation of a road trip from north RI to south jersey for an endurance ride.(mustang memorial)
it should have taken 4-5 hours.
i went west on the ny state throughway 287 to avoid going through nyc and the bronx. somewhere in southern ny state, nyack ny, my new radiator exploded all over my engine making a huge smokey mess.
i got pulled over quick, let it cool off, and spent a few minutes looking at it.
my friend who was with me called us rider who got us connected with a heavy service provider within an hour.
my radiator is leaking heavily but his shop is less than 5 miles away, the next exit, almost right next to the highway. so we fill up with water, i put on the flashers and follow him to the next exit. i'd say were were on the side of the highway with the hood up for 1 hour45 minutes total. get off the ramp-we are half a mile from the shop and an unmarked state trooper gets between us and PULLS OVER THE SERVICE VEHICLE.
youve got to be kidding me.
i pull behind them shut off my truck, and now i'm really leaking and steaming up .
we sit there for another half hour while the cop busts this guys nuggets about if i'm heavy enough to be serviced by him, because he is only authorized to service heavy trucks on the thru-way.
any trooper worth his salt could plainly see that a 1 ton crew cab dually pulling a 25 foot gooseneck is probably heavy enough.
during this whole thing he says "i drove by you a few times and wondered what was going on and wondered how you got hooked up with this guy" then WHY DIDNT YOU STOP AND ASSIST US! like your supposed to do
he gets my registrations from me and checks my gvw weights which are listed as 10k for the truck and 8k for the trailer. i have since looked up there own rules and just my dually is consitered heavy (6 wheels or more a gvwr of 6,999 or more)
now i'm thinking hes going check my rig, but let him, my shit works, ive got fire extinguishers, wheel chocks, triangles etc.
but theres nothing he can do we are both legal and in the right, so he lets us go with out even an apology.we contine to the shop which is walking distance from where we were stopped. if you wanted to bust his nuts, couldnt you just wait till we pulled in there?
the second half of my adventure involves wheather or not a dually is allowed on the garden state parkway south of the nj turnpike? it said no trucks, which usually means tractor trailers. it was narrow, but maybe i should have been on the turnpike instead? there rules are hard to understand, but nobody said anything and i was not pulled over either coming or going.

He sounded young, board or just trying to be super cop.Most troopers have more to do with their time than pester someone trying to take care of their business. I know PA Troopers would appreciate that you removed your rig in a timely manner. Not all troopers are idiots like this one sounded.

I'm not anti cop or for causing a state boy trouble on his job.But,did you happen to get Trooper NY's name? I think I might zoom his troop commander a note on how he "drove past a few times and wondered what was going on" then finally decided to come over and give youall some grief.

i was trying to see if his shirt had a name or number on it, but didnt see anything. i was already of thinking of filing a complain while i was sitting there. he harassed the guy, looked at my papers, questioned me, told me he saw us on the ny state thru way when he drove by "a couple of times" then harassed tow driver some more before he took off.
my passenger was on the phone with the tow drivers passenger,-his wife- during the whole thing trying to find out what the problem was.
he was never nice, nor of any assistance.
sorry, i'll try to break down somewhere else next time.
we were just happy to see him leave.

Don't they have to have a badge/name on their shirt? How can they pull someone over without it? I would be hesitant to stop by an unmarked car but even more so if the officer was in plain clothes. If this was the case, I would've called 911 and explained what was happening.

commercial plates are not allowed on parkway. you could tell the the complete office the time and day you were pulled over that may help or tow company a lot of trouble

He'd be ticked off by a whole lot more by the time I got done with the situation.I wouldn't let it go,myself.I'd find out who it was and I'd send his commander a letter or file a complaint.
I have to say that we had a flat on a very busy 4 lane (I 60) around Springfield,MO a year ago Memorial Day weekend.Had a blowout,loaded with 2 horses and no way off the interstate,no shoulder to get out on and try to fix it,and,speed limit of 70 and buddy,they were doing every bit of it.I called 911 and an officer from the Springfield PD came right on,escorted us to the next exit which was just up the road less than 1/4 mile but we didn't know that.He was extremely nice and helpful,and,I contacted his commanding officer and let him know about this officer's helpfulness and how appreciative we were. I respect and admire police and other law enforcement but some such as Trooper NY need to remember that they are to "protect and serve" and try to be a little less of a jacka** at times.

i'm doing some searching for info on the state police barracks that probably service that area. i'll let you know what i do and where it gets me. right now i am trying to get a refund on my less than 30 day-old radiator. they are giving me grief about that too. trying to say they dont cover holes, that something hit it.(from the inside!) that my thermostat must have stuck, and caused it to fail.(from the metal part??)the damn thing failed cause it wasnt made/recored properly and wont hold presure. ugh.

Yes,well,here's a suggestion about THAT one.Tell them you're getting ready to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the State Attorney General's Office.I'm sure there are other reporting agencies that the state AG can refer you to,also.That might help change their minds about the reason why the radiator failed.Did you tell them yourself that you,a woman,actually know the reason why the radiator didn't hold up? Might cause them to fall out with shock,but,they might start rethinking things,too.

I've been going in and out of court houses the last few weeks.Looking up real estate transactions etc.Plus I was looking for a guy in a apartment complex dealing with a unpaid business transaction.They called a sheriff on me.ALL the Sheriffs I have dealt with have had nasty attitudes.A couple of them at court houses are fat,out of shape bad attitudes.Two of these guys in busy court houses were the rudest most unhelpful sobs I have encountered in years. I asked my therapist about this.He said its common and a big issue nationwide.He said they must really be unhappy in their jobs.

Most of them ones I come across are bad overweight.I have watched some at Ryan's buffet at lunch time.OMG.I can't see how they get through the rest of the day after the 1000s of calories they consume.Chase a crook! Yea right.LOL

Hmmmm...The trooper should have stopped to assist. He/She was wrong. Where in NY was this? Get the Troop Letter (e.g. A, B, C, D troop) Should be a listing on a website someplace. When you find out which troop he's in call and ask for the Major in charge of that unit. Explain your story "in full". This trooper needs an attitude adjustment. My husband is a retired NYS trooper and believe me - THIS kind of behavior is completely unacceptable.

Did you see the movie "Cop Land"? Sly Stallone said that he meant no disrespect to law officers because he'd played one before in his movies,but,he purposely gained weight and looked pudgy around his waistline to play the part of Sheriff Fred Heflin because he said "hey,it's just typical."

My husband is a police officer, also ( as a supervisor; he deals with complaints on his guys and calls them out if they are wrong.) and I agree with pasobeth.. Yes, some cops are SOB's but if they get called on it enough, there are disciplinary actions taken.. This guy should have offered to help instead of searching for something to bust you with..... Hounddog, as to cops/troopers/deputies being a bunch of fatties.. I agree that the force should enforce some type of fitness regimen, and make their officers accountable for it..like SWAT enforces fitness, agility and shooting accuracy. they have mandatory requirements.. You don't pass.. you don't "play".... Most of those troopers spend 10-12 hours behind the wheel of a car, only getting out to write a ticket or take a leak.. Or for lunch as you mentioned before.... It doesn't take too much imagination to figure as to why they might be a bit hefty.

Actually, in NYS the troopers MUST maintain a healthy (not obese) weight or they are put on a "fat-boy" (for lack of a better word) list. They can be furloughed if they don't stay in good working shape. It has been that way for a number of years, now.
Also - here's the link for the Troop "Letter" designation. If you were on the NYS Thruway then you want the Troop "T" contact.

Weight dosen't have anything to do with the nasty attitude so many have. The ones I encounter in court houses for the most part are real asses.The other day I wa in a really busy courthouse in a town thats been really growing.The two at the check in you could look and see naty attitude ozzing from them.

He probably didn't stop because once an officer of the law stops at a broke down vehicle the officer cannot leave until that vehicle is operational agaian. And that is straight from the horses mouth, when I broke down one time, cop sat with me for over an hour it was kind of funny.
But I can't figure out why your crying about this, you didn't get a ticket. And your probably lucky you didn't get a ticket for leaking anti-freeze all over, I've heard of that happening. Had a friend with a diesel tank in the back of his box and had it plumped into his tank on the truck. He parked it and the hose between the two takns got cut and the cop said he could of wrote him a ticket for close to couple thousand for a fine, so I think your lucky for not getting one for anit-freeze.
I'm sure the cop was being an ass, but you gotta remeber he probably puts up with so much stuff from people that get pulled over. I'm sure you were in a great mood also so you were being super nice.

actually while planning my route, for this trip and my june trip to niagara falls i read the rules of nys thru way, that if you break down, you must pull over to the right and raise your hood and wait for a state trooper to assist you.tow companies must be licenced with the state,to provide service on certain roads- because prices are controlled to protect the motorist from being preyed opon by tow companies.
his interest was in hassling the service provider. he was only interested in my registered weights. he just chose to make us stop 1/2 mile from the garage. i was only leaking water at that point. but 2 ladies with a horse trailer, that are having a problem? what if it was 100 degrees out?
we had sat on the side of the road for almost 2 hrs already. he saw us. he kept going.
i suppose it could have been worse,but let me get off the road. the service provider said its illegal to leave livestock on the road, and the trooper should have been concearned about that first, not weather or not i was a couple of hundred pounds shy of being a "heavy truck" so he could service me.
