Anybody tie to a high line with a neck collar? Can you tell me the advantage over halters? I have been reading about them but would like somebody with personal experience.

Yes! I very much prefer using collars on the high line. You can tie the rope shorter, but still allow the horse just as much (more) freedom of movement and they can still lay down or reach the ground without having the rope dangerously long. My horses scratch their ears with their back hooves, and I always worry that they will hang a leg over a too long rope. I have had horses spook and run to the end of the rope with a lot of force, then are immediately redirected by the collar pressure and calm down instantly, no problems at all with the set up.

Haven't checked in on this forum in awhile so sorry for the delayed response. If you're still undecided I'll give another positive to them. Been using them for probably a decade now and feel much more comfortable, and I think the horses are more comfortable. I can't remember the tricks to posting pictures in this forum so here's a link to my two laying down on a picket line.

I use a collar, friends of mine thread the lead through some milking hose to prevent rope burn. Once my horse was able to back out of the collar when the horse next to her started kicking her with both back feet. (it was in the back woods and we unavoidably had them tied very close together, we had to give her a new neighbor then things were peaceful on the high line)I was glad she got away. She has never gotten out of it since then.

I too use a collar when I highline my horse. The only problem I have ever had is with some horses with a long mane, the mane will tangle around the collar and could be a problem. Other than that my horse (who has a long mane) does great with it. I think he's more likely to lay down with it too.
