I'm a New Member here...A few weeks ago, we sold our bumper pull trailer, and purchased a almost New Kiefer Gooseneck trailer with sleeping Quarters.
Our plan is to go away for a long weekend and take the horses to Hungry Horse in Ivanhoe, VA.
My question is...what do you take with you in the trailer for a weekend?

You'll find with time, you'll have a second of most things you keep at home and you'll keep a supply in the trailer. I went to a dollar store and picked up a lot of items. I keep pots, pans, dish towels, bath towels, t.p. paper, paper plates, cups, blankets, heater, fan, extra jackets & clothes, rain gear, boots etc.
I look at safety and keep a first aid kit for people and horses both. I plan for flat tires and have a trailer aid to drive up on for changing tires, heavy duty wrench, shovel to lift tires, tarp to put on ground if muddy.
Fly sprays for people and horses, buckets, feed pans. I usually keep an extra halter, lead ropes, bridle, anything you might need for your horses.
Things to use to start a fire plus lawn chairs. I usually keep fire starter cubes and liquid charcoal starter.
You'll probably over pack at first and with time, you'll start taking things back out that you never use.

It's taken me 20 years to skim down, but I can honestly say, If I don't have something I just make due with out it. I like the clear storage bins, so you can see what is inside them. Get the good ones that don't leak so they don't have to take up prime inside space. Two medium sized ones are better than one big one for me for all the extra spare stuff I never use.

New trailer, first time out. Good idea to stay on roads with a wide shoulder. Flats tires are tough to change on back roads. More flats with new tires than older worn tires.
I also learned a new wrinkle with our trip to Montana this year. We had too many flats. While replacing the last flat, I was talking to the tire store manager. Found out 8 out of 10 flats and/or blow outs are on the right side of the vehicle/trailer. On most highways there's a crack in the pavement along the right side of the road. This crack catches debris from the road and stands most of it upright. Avoid that crack.

Already belong to US Rider. They are not of much help with flats, unless your stranded somewhere. You still have to find a new tire and pay for it. I can change them faster then you can call them and have someone come out. This year we had a few blow outs where we could of used them, but no phone service.
I did do some research on blow outs as soon as we got back home. If your loaded, and most trailer are, and you loose as little as 10 lbs of pressure, it only takes a short time for them to overheat and blow. So, you traveling down the road, pickup a nail or whatever, from the crack. Tire leaks a bit, overheats and blows. I ordered a tire monitoring systems that continually monitors both the tire pressure and the temperature. Should save a lot of tires.

We did find a good samaritan. We blew both right trailers tires at 4:55 pm on Friday. We were in front of a local business. I went in and met the owner. He called around to see if he could find a tire, but no luck. I put on the one spare and slowly went to his back lot. He let use use his grassed back lot for the night. Left his shop and office open to use all night, so we'd have water, electric and phone. We put up a hot fence for the horses and spent a rather relaxed evening, rather than a horrible one on he road. Offered to pay him, but he wouldn't hear of it. Next morning he loaned me his pickup to go into town and get the tires.

Don't know just when you plan on camping at Hungry Horse but just want to let you know we have been having a lot of rain up this way & some of the roads are closed due to wash outs. Hwy 94 going in to Fries, Va. is one of them. Also your horses will need shoes. I'm going there camping the second week of Sept. but have been there a few time before & love it but it is only 25 miles from my home. Hope you have a great stay!

We just came back from a 3 day camp trip to Hungry Horse in Ivanhoe, Va
We had a great time, and we are definitely going back...Great trails , beautiful camp side.
