I have a 3H slant GN, no LQ, stock sides with 7000 lb axles. I have a 1200 lb horse and 300 lbs of gear. The ride seems a little rough. Will the ride be any better with this weight if I use a 2H with either 5200 or 3500 lb axles on a similar type trailer?

Rough ride can be a combination of truck, trailer, and/or loading.
What are you 'calling' rough ? Hard ride, porpoising, truck and/or trailer ?
Which stall do you load with the gear and your horse ?
Have you tried shifting the weight to improve balance ?

The gear is in the GN and the mare has been in all three stalls, usually in the back one. Same ride. I don't see any give or absorption of the bumps over subgrade road or rough pavement. I'm using a 7.3 dually so I'm probably running less than half of my weight capacity. I am not getting rid of the 7.3 so I wanted to ask if it would make the ride any better going to a smaller trailer.

Are the axles leaf springs or rubber torsion? Do you put any bedding material down on the floor to help cushion the ride? Do you use mats inside the trailer?

Steel or aluminum trailer? What does it weigh? Most basic 3H GN alumninum trailers will carry no more than 5200# axles, because they aren't heavy enough to need 7Ks. An axle rides best when it is loaded, and you aren't loading yours enough maybe?

Definitely not loading it enough. It is an aluminum 4Star with 7000 lb axles. So will loading 2000 lbs of horse and gear make the ride any better if I did it on 5200 lb axles? 3500 lb axles? I would guess somewhat better but enough difference to warrant getting another trailer?

Just curious -- you say it is rough because you have ridden back there with your horse? ?Because I have ridden in the back of my trailer and it seemed better than I thought it would, Pretty easy to stand up and keep balance, not as much wind in the windows as I would have thought, seemed smooth enough for me.

Have you contacted a local shop to see what their cure would be, they might have the experience to tell you if the ride is indeed normal or not. I have 7K axles on my 22' Elite show trailer and the ride is better than the 24' Featherlite stock with the same axles. Have you ridden in the back? Are the tires to blame?
