There are many portable units made for backpacking use. Check out Cabelas or REI or any other large outdoors outfitter. They carry several models. These are just for purifying a couple of gallons at a time for cooking, drinking etc.

I have a MSR Water Works that I have used for years (early eighties). It was expensive but can be totally rebuilt in the field with a spare parts kit. It's available at backpacking stores along with a wide variety of other less expensive options.
