I followed the links to see your stallion and was wondering...does the color guarantee cover all mares? The reason I ask is this...I have a bay breeding stock appaloosa grade mare whose parents were both leopards. I have been told that she would most certainly throw color if she were bred. What are the chances I could get a solid or blanket buckskin from your stud with this mare? I don't think she would end up with a palomino. Could be wrong.

Thanks, Renee

Hi Renee,

Interesting question. Let me research this a little and get back to you.  I have an idea, but I'd rather get some confirmation from some trusted resources.

Renee,

Basically, as a base color, you have a 50% chance for buckskin and a 50% chance for Palamino.  But it is very difficult to say for certain that those colors would be distinct since the leopard allele interacts with the back ground color  (in addition to Cr allele) of many horses to cause dilution and concentration of color.

Now about the leopard pattern, (not my strong area), there was a study that concluded that "the backgroud color genotype does influence  the level of expression of the leopard complex patterns."  To summarize, "a chestut base color facilitates  greater levels of white in patterned foals than do the bay and black based colors." So if I had to guess, I'd say your chances are good that you would get a solid or minimal manifistation of the leopard pattern.   But I couldn't guarantee that since there are so many variables to consider.  And unfortunately, I don't know enough about or have any experience breeding horses that display the leopard pattern.

RichB-
I appreciate you taking the time to look that info up for me...I have been trying to get background information on your stud and can't come up with anything...Can you give me details about him? Bloodlines, height, temperment, his work experience, how his foals are doing, etc...I would like to breed the mare next spring for an '07 baby.

Hi Renee,

You can check out his pedigree and get some good shots of him at: www.ranchocremello.com.

I'll PM you with all the other details.

P.S. The pictures of our mares are awful, new ones coming.

Hey RichB - When does the farm start booking mares for him for next spring? I am sure I would need to get the shipped semen being that we are on opposite coasts. Is the stud fee going to run the same?
