I have a recently purchased 2003 Sundowner Sierra that has some small roof leaks so we’d like to seal the roof. However, we aren’t sure what to use as a sealant.

It appears to have a film/rubber coating already in place but not sure when that was applied. Can we apply sealant over this or will it have to be scraped down? Also, any recommendations on products to use?

We are experienced in RV roof sealing, just haven’t had history with this particular trailer so don’t want to create any issues.

Thank you!

For many years Sundowner used Sika 221 for their roofs. I did see the other day they were using Sika 521UV now. Data sheets look very similar and I don't know why the change. Much like painting- your base will determine how well the new material holds. The old stuff has to be removed with a brush or other mechanical means.

Re-read your post. When the trailer left Sundowner, it would have been a bare aluminum roof (prepainted white was an option for a while around then too) with the Sika sealant around the edges (over the rivets) and around the antenna, vents, etc. If there's something else up there now, you'll need to investigate. I know there are some various things folks have applied over the years like Kool-Seal, but the factory never did.
