Many times, fairgrounds will open up for this type of evacuation. 

And... if horses are taught to tie on a picket or high line you could drive out of the path of the hurricane and set up camp someplace for a few days.

Also - many, many horsepeople will help other horsepeople. Make sure you have all your documents on your horse(s) in order and take them with you. (Health certs, rabies, coggins, ownership/transfer, etc.) Don't leave your horse unattended at the temporary location.

If you live in the "hurricane zone", having plans for your animals and yourself should be priority. Don't just think about where you will go if a hurricane comes, but what to do after if your house and barn are completely gone.

I sure do feel for those down south right now and am thankful for Northern Michigan's climate.

My neighbours think I'm nuts for having a plan to take my animals.  2 hurricanes have come close to us in the past 3 yrs and each time my truck has been loaded, trailer hooked up/loaded with hay, feed and unreplaceable stuff.   The horses were locked in their pens near the house, cats were in their kennels, the dog was locked in the house, and we just waited to see where the storms were going.  Fortunately none have hit us, though one did hit 6 months before we moved here.  Our house got a new roof from it.

I have room for a couple in the pasture, but because it's been so dry there is no grass.  Hay would have to be provided.
