8 we were at a mid michigan horse show and during the pot luck some one pulled in and stole our horse. She is a big b/s paint mare 17 hands 1450lbs dark chestnut with 2 front short white socks and white to her ankle on right hind leg. she is a big impressive bred mare very noticable. she has white star stipe and snip on her face and a big scar on her right knee. my daughter raised her from 5 months old and had shown her know 4 years very successfully. I guess my biggest question is what do people do with horses they steal and why?

I'm figuring the thieves either sell the horse at an auction for quick cash(but with today's Coggin's testing and proof thereof, they wouldn't get far past the sale barn) or for slaughter. If your horse is worth a pretty penny there is potential for breeding her, but without registration papers, they won't get very far.
Sorry to hear of this tragedy. Keep an eye on local ads, sale websites, check out auctions.

I personally think they'll keep her to breed. She sounds nice and with her being a BS paint, I'll bet they pass her off as a QH with some other horses papers. I've seen similar things happen down here in Texas.
I honestlly do wish you the best of luck. Have you contacted your state ag department to see if they'll check the border stops for her?

Huntseat - ... no border stops here in MI...
I'm thinking that (a) the woman that leased her to the young rider wanted the horse back (and broke the contract if she did this) or (b) a competitor wanted her out of the way.

Here's what someone who was at the show, where the horse was stolen from, said:
Yes, it caused quite an uproar at the show. We were at the end of our annual meeting when it was discovered. The entire circuit jumped and ran to cover the grounds looking for her. It was then that some ladies started thinking about some events earlier in the day...odd man sitting in a van, then sitting in a truck/trailer...truck trailer parked, empty, in the back of the barns...then they all realized the truck pulled out during the potluck...I talked to the young girls mom that night and she said that they lease the mare from a lady that sets up programs with her horses from weanlings to allow youth kids to raise, train and show her horses. Now that this mare is doing so extremely well as a show horse, the lady wants her back. They've been going round with this lady all summer long. They have a contract and according to her lawyer they have all rights to continue to show this mare. Now the mare has up and disappeared. They are certain that this lady has something to do with it but haven't quite figured out how she could have known they were in Ithaca. It's 2 hours from home for them! I do hope that they get her back. That girl has worked very hard to accomplish all she has with her. And to have it all end like this? It's just wrong. The entire MMOHSC circuit feels for her loss.

That's just sad. I wonder how the woman who owns the horse has reacted to this theft. If the horse was doing well, then why not let the kid keep showing until the lease was up and then put her up for sale and advertise the show record? Why fight over it?
