Keep in mind that all of New Orleans is not under water.   The Audobon Park area faired really well.  Most of the horses are boarded out that way.  I am sure that alot were evacuated to higher ground before the storm.  The zoo is out that way too and other than losing a few otters and having a gator escape they did fine.

But I want to add that this is the exception.  This is the worst disaster in US history.  It is just as bad as the news depicts it.  That anyone survived is only because they evacuated.  There is a nursing home in Chalmette where the staff left because of the flooding.  They left the patients in their beds where they drowned.  You cannot even imagine the horrible images and stories.

The staff claims that they called for help and when no one came they took who they could and left the rest.  30 elderly patients died in their beds when the flood waters came in.

Here is another update along with a scam alert:

Well, here I am, home, with your update for the night.  I am forwarding an email I want you all to  read that was sent out today.  I just came back from down south, and I commend all LAMAR is doing, but if only 2 rescues are being recognized, can they handle the whole southern region? I'm here to tell you the answer is NO!!!  I was there.  I just came home.  I saw the devastation.  I have 2 sister rescues down there that need our help.  Ranchers that need feed and hay.  Horses are drinking water contaminated with salt from the ocean. In commend Lamar for being an intake center for pets.  It should be, so pets can be reunited with people.  I was there last night when a man came in and recognized his brothers 2 horses.  The man's name matched the microchip number on the coggins.  Another good reason people should microchip and coggins their animals!!!!  This could be your horse missing!  The greatest gift of love you can give your horse is vaccines, coggins, and microchip...so make that your gift NOW for your animal. If  this hurricane hasn't woke you up, nothing will.  The devastation is more than you can imagine.  Compare it to Nam or Iraq. Yes, the bodies are floating.  Alligators and snakes are for real!!! So no, I am not going in the gates of hell either. But I will dance around the edge!!!! Get on the caravan people and help me this Saturday.  They  couldn't get food and water to our people, ...do you really think they are worrying about getting it to your pets!!!! Yea right!!! I want you to join me this Saturday in holding hands together to save our pets.  I would like all that offered to join us to save the pets, to pack your trailers.  Horse feed, halters, lead ropes, vaccines, and Hay.  SummerGrove Baptist church has  donated us their parking lot to line up on Saturday at 8924 Jewella Avenue in Shreveport. We will pull out at 6am. It's a huge parking lot and right next to the freeway.  The most beautiful sight I saw going down there was the caravan of military trucks with supplies. Once again, for the people, and that's great.  But let's go feed our animals!!!!  LAMAR has plenty of supplies. They are set up on the west side in Gonzales. We will be taking ours to the northeast side.  In the Hammond area.  That is where HARP rescue is.  The fireman had to water their horses down in there.  HARP is setting up a place for us to come in.  Those in south TX or south La can meet up with us in Lafayette at 9:30 am.  I will get that designation point so we can all ride in together. I already had a man call coming with 60 bales of hay...another with 100 bags of feed.  For those that can't go along, please bring what you can to the drop off points.  We will pack them in other trucks  All donations of cash will be tax deductible from HHERO.  The only donations of supplies that are tax deductible from HHERO will be the ones that made previous arrangements with me, like the lady from Vermont.  Reason being is these supplies Saturday aren't coming to HHERO, they are going down south to a disaster region to strangers who need your help.  If that is imperative for you to have, then I suggest you donate to an org that can give you that.
I want to take a second to let each of you know that I totally appreciate all you are doing as far as helping get funds, emails, foster home offers, and the list goes on.
Our effort for the horses was to originally offer foster homes to people wanting to evacuate with their families. We got response, and that action will remain in place for further disasters.  Now people evacuating will know what services we have to offer.  Hauling if needed, a place to stay with your horses, and our love and support.  I took pics yesterday but didn't get developed yet.  Will do tomorrow.  I will keep you all posted tomorrow on the site in Lafayette, etc.  Love to all..Email me with who will be going and what you will be bringing.  To donate items even if you don't want to go, please bring to the drop points. Lisa Simmons will be coordinating the meeting point in Lafayette on the I-49 close to the I-10.  God Bless all for the help...Let's take care of the animals
