Hello:
Any suggestions as to where to overnight 4 well mannered horses on a trip from ARkansas up 71 and then 29 through Joplin, Kansas City, Omaha and Sioux Falls then west to Custer SD. We are in 2 LQ horse trailers and can survive without hookups if we need to. I am new to traveling with horses. We had a guy who bought a horse from us who just camped out in county fairgrounds but I can't handle flying by the seat of my pants and need to plan this out. Where do you season veterans who travel with horses stay? I've checked online looking for horse motels and most are way off our line of travel. We will be doing this the last week of Sept. and first week of Oct. if diesel doesn't get much worse.

Cabela's has corrals at their stores and they have power/water hook-up. The stores in Sidney and Kearney would be a great place to overnite. I have never seen horses in them before. They are small nice corrals with no shelter. Not sure if the other stores have them or not. Shannon Valley stables in Smithville Mo, Red Barn arena in Bolivia Mo

We stayed at Aunt Reba's in northwestern IA just south of Sioux Falls...its not far off 29, you should be able to make it there in a day...we drove 18 hours from southern Ohio on our trip to the Bighorns in Wyoming 2 years ago....she has a nice setup. She can put up your horses in a barn with large stalls, or outside in small pens. We stayed in our trailers, she also has rooms. We arrived there late, but she came out and got us setup and was great. She is listed in both horsetrip.com and horsetrip.com. On our way back, we stayed on a private farm south of Sioux City off of 29...but I cant find the listing anymore on the horse motels...so they may be out of the business...if I find the name/phone, I'll post it here.

There is Honey Creek Conservation area 50 miles north of st joseph,mo right off of 20 and Little Sioux has private horse camp, about 3 miles from 29. I found these on the horse and mule trailguide website. Mitchell,SD has 4 pens at the Cabellas, but you have to get there early. There is also a place called Waubonsie state park located in the south west corner of Iowa.
