tx.....I been waitin for a shortbed owner to give some feedback...They must be Christmas shopping! You should have no problems...but need to be careful while turning sharp with some trailers. The sides of the nose can hit the back of the cab with some trailers. A tapered nose will fix that problem! There are some special extenders to help with this problem http://www.turnoverball.com/extender/ You might not need it with some trailers. Of course you are limited to the tow rating of your truck. My post will get it back to the top so when the shortbed people get back from their Christmas shopping they can give you some more specific info!

I have a 2004 Dodge shortbed and Silver Star gooseneck with tapered nose. No problems whatsoever. I even had to do a U-turn on a 2 lane highway on Sunday! B&W hide-a-ball is set in the normal place, over the rear axle. Pic of the rig is in my album (link below)

we have a '02 1500 pull a gooseneck with no problem. We have a Merhow. I know when we bought ours the dealer had us make a sharp turn to see if it would clear. Thought that was nice because I would have never thought of it.

There is always lots of "buzz" about this potential problem but it ALMOST never occurs. Sure as I say that there will be 20 regulars (no pun intended) on this board that will cite an experience they had or a friend-of-a-friend had.
If it were a significant problem there would be as many banged up cabs and broken rear windows as there are bent tailgates (forgot to put it down?) or dually fenders (seems like they are always banged up).

I have a 2001 Dodge shortbed with a gooseneck and was very worried about banging the cab up. After almost 5 years with no dents, I got casual last weekend and let a friend help me back into a tight spot....Yup! She backed me right onto myself. So, my suggestion is to drive slowly, carefully, and NEVER trust anyone to help you park your trailer.

I would think that the width of the trailer, and thus the width of the gooseneck, would have a lot to do with whether the cab gets banged up. Those who have never had problem, are you towing a 6 ft wide 2-horse straight load, 8.5 ft six-horse straight load, or a 7 or 8 ft wide slant?
Just wondering--this never seems to come up in the discussion.

I have a 2005 Dodge with the 4 doors and short bed. I was warned to be careful when backing because I could get into my cab. I was very careful, but am still learning the art of backing a trailer. Within 2 months of getting my truck I put out the back window! I have a Elite Mustang which does have the somewhat tapered nose and the ball is where it is supposed to be. Now I am terrified when some cowboy offers to help me park it since I know now that it really can happen! I wasn't going fast at all, just barely nudged it and POP! I replaced the window but did not fix the small dent in the cab because I was told by several men friends that it will probably happen again!!!!!

Ooops, guess I don't have that. I have a B & W hitch but I don't have the extender. Can I convert mine by just buying the extender and how much does that cost? Might be cheaper than replacing my window again!

Yes it will fit. It is made by B&W for just the problem you are haveing. You can't turn it over like the one that came with it. Store it under the seat if you have to haul something. I found one at valley vet.
