My friend wants to go to Brown County for Memorial day weekend.  They only have 6 electric sites left, none close together.  What campground is close that we could still meet people who are camped over there and also possibly ride to story and back in about 6 hours, quarter horse time?

Do you have to have an electric site or would primitive do? Last time I checked there were primitive sites still available. There are several campgrounds that provide riding in the Hoosier National Forrest and you can connet up to the trails in Brown County but it is definately a full days ride. I can get you some info on those campgrounds if you would like them.   Also, Yellowwood is very close to Brown County, but it is all primitive camping also.

Electric is preferred especilly since that will probably be the first full weekend with my newly re-redone trailer!  But if you could send me any info about any of the surrounding campsites that would be great!  On kinda a side note another friend is looking for a book with all the horse campgrounds listed nationally, claims to have seen one somewhere.  thanks!

The Indiana Trailriders have a book listing all places in Indiana to camp public and private. There were a few private places that did not wnat to be listed.  Its free to members or you can get pay and get one sent to you. ITRA promotes trailriding in the state and works with DNR and Gov't. to get money to get more trails and improve what we have. If you would like more info let me know.

I searched and searched for the ITRA website or info on that book and couldn't find it.  So yeah, any more info would be greatly appreciated.

WOW, Brown Co is reserving spaces already???  They used to do a lottery - & it was later in the spring, seems like you had to have your "preferred choices" in by Feb or March & then they drew by April.  Kinda sad they don't do that anymore....that way you could put your whole group in together & get spots together..

The address is http://www.intrailriders.org/  The state went to call in reservations about 5-6 yrs ago. You have to call or you can get on the web site  to make them. You can start 6 mo. before the date you are wanting to camp.  May 1st is the first day you have to have reservations. Up to that time it is 1st come 1st serve. I'll look up the site for the reservations, I don't have it right now.

We stayed at Midwest Trail Ride which I don't think is too far away, you'd have to call and ask them.

The place was clean and you could eat meals there.  Each campsite is 25' x 100' with electric and water hookups. They also have nice 8' x 8' covered box stalls.  They have modern restrooms with shower facilities and a dump station.

We rode the trails around that campground area but also hauled to other parks in the area and found the trails to be nice.

Another suggestion would be to go on horseandmuletrails.com/

It give you places to ride all over the United States.  You get on the site and then you'll see a map of the United States and then you click on what state you'd like to check out.

I strongly suggest you visit Mid West Trails. They have a large campground good stalls for your horse good shower facilities and a great dining hall with a buffet at each meal. You must buy a bridle tag to ride in the forest but it is worth it because the trails are kept very well. It is located just miles from Brown County. If you need to contact me and I can get in touch with I have their phone number here at home.

Good Luck.

I live very near Brown Co. State Parks Horsemans Camp and have pulled a trailer to Midwest. Either way (up 135 S. or down 135 S.) take approx. an hour.

I think your best bet for being close to BC is getting whatever sites you can at BC. I camp with friends and we usually can't get together but thats half the fun, meeting new friends camped beside us and going to each others fire at night to set around and visit.

Thanks for all the help.  I can't believe all the camps that are full already!  I will definitely be at Midwest sometime, if not Memorial Day!
