I go to the 4J every October and really enjoy going. The campground is new within the last four years and they have nice stalls for your horses.  The riding can be rough and rocky but is well worth climbing to the top for some of the beautiful views they have over looking the high bluffs.  I'd suggest you pad your horses since Illinois is like Iowa and not real rocky.  The food is good and I always seem to gain some weight while I'm there.  The family is also nice and are helpful if you need anything.  Makes me think of vacation and I'm ready to go... You'll really enjoy it! Have a great vacation & safe one.

If it's view your going for, go to Shawnee!!! Shimek is OK, but your right, no views! We went to big piney about 10 years ago, and it was really nice. You'd better have an appetite, cause they'll feed you really good!!! The trails are nice, and some are rocky (heck, it's missouri). We would like to go back with our son now, but for this year, it's Shawnee again! www.bearbranch.com
Have you tried Siloam Springs near Quincy? It's great riding too, just not many views. Again, for beautiful views, SHAWNEE!!!
