I'm looking at a 2014 Kiefer Genesis GX2, 2 horse slant with dressing room. Its 16' on the floor, 23' long total all aluminum. I'm getting it for 4400 off the retail price. Its my first trailer I'm buying on my own and this is the first NEW trailer I like thats within my monthly budget. Any reviews please?

That sounds like a very good deal. We really liked our Keifer, we had to upgrade to a larger living quarters or we would still have it.

We have a Keifer Genesis 3 horse BP and are very happy with it. It hasn't given a moments trouble in the several years we've owned it ( bought it new). When we were shopping, I searched the interweb for prices on the trailer and our trade-in and discovered the deal we got was pretty good.

We bought a new 2009 Kiefer Genesis 3H gooseneck with a 4.5 ft shortwall tack room ... about 19 ft on the floor. We thought we loved the trailer but the longer we keep it, the more we realize that it is a lower end trailer and you get what you pay for. We initially had some problems with the divider latches and saddle rack mounting which were fixed under warranty. Poor quality welding and lack of attention to design detail.

Sometimes around 2011 or 2012, Kiefer changed ownership (went bankrupt??) and the new owners would not honor the existing 7 year structural warranty ... there went the advantage of buying a new trailer with warranty.

Shortly have that time, we noticed that when our mare pee'd in the trailer, it was running out at the wheel well. Upon detailed inspection, we found that the wheel pans (aluminum wheel wheels) on both sides of the trailer had developed cracks. A trip to the aluminum welding shop and about $700 later had the wheel pans fixed better than new. Discussion through our dealer with the manufacturer resulted in poor repair suggestions and a real lack of interest of improving their product.

We now find that the white aluminum side panels (which are glued together) are starting to separate in places ... will have to do a rivet job this spring to rectify that problem. Good thing we have a friend who repairs helicopters and riveting is one of his favorite jobs.

This is on a trailer which has seen little gravel, likely has less than 6000 miles on it and gets washed out every time a horse pees in it (yes, every time). That reminds me of another problem ... the wall between the tack room and the horse compartment was not properly sealed and we ended up with horse pee in the tack compartment ... fixed with some caulking (and ripping out the tack room carpet) but again, another example of lack of attention to detail. What ever happened to quality workmanship?

In summary, you get what you pay for. Proceed cautiously and perhaps budget for a few occasional trailer repairs if you buy an entry level trailer.

Regards, 3CW

I am sorry to here about your frustrations with your Kiefer trailer. During the recession the company experienced some tough times, as did many trailer manufacturers, and unfortunately it reflected in our products at that time. However, in early 2010 Stellar Industries, a well established employee owned truck equipment manufacturer also located in Iowa purchased the assets of Kiefer Built and has been implementing positive changes since then.

Since that purchase, Kiefer has made many product design changes and countless enhancements to our trailers, as well as put an experienced management team in place that has many years of manufacturing and trailer industry knowledge to lead Kiefer going forward.

Should you, or the original poster on this thread, have any questions or additional comments regarding our current product offerings, please feel free to call me to discuss.  Randy Lewis- General Sales & Marketing Manager, my direct line is 641 762 8403 or email me at rlewis@kiefermfg.com
