Is a 12,000 GW tag enough for a 3 horse featherlight with a 13'short wall? I know it was enough for the 6' LQ, but wondering if I need more on this trailer. I run 11,000 on the truck if that matters. I was planning on getting tags tomorrow, don't know what the next size up even is.

Nope too cold for that, I will just guess high if I have too, which is what I did on the last one. However I thought someone on here would know the answer.

Does Indiana require actual weight or GVWR of a trailer before it issues plates?

I guess GVWR since I have had a trailer for 36 years and never been ask to weigh one. We just always had a 7,000 when we had a 2 or 3 horse without LQ. When we got a LQ due to all the DOT stuff I read I figured I would up it to 12,000 to make sure it was covered. Honestly I never pay any attention to what other people have on theirs. I may put off the license branch tomorrow, just to make sure.

The trailer should have a tag with GVW rating on it usually under the gooseneck

It does I believe it's 6400, but I wasn't sure if that included the LQ, it's a factory LQ not something added later. I sure hope that weight is correct, I may be able to stay under 27,000# and avoid at the DOT scary crap I have read on here. I was always under the impression that my 6' LQ met those requirements so I never worried about it. Sure would be happy if this one was under the radar too, it's a 3 horse aluminum 13' LQ in case anyone has an opinion on that issue. I will do a little more checking before I go to the license branch, thanks for all the info.

I am from Ohio and when I took title to the license branch, she gave me tags that say RV on it and were about $45.00.

I just purchased a 7ft shortwall, 2 horse slant. The weight on the new title was actually less than my 2 horse gn without lq's that I had traded in. I was going from a steel/aluminum sundowner to an all aluminum merhow. When I questioned the dealer on this i was told that the weight on the title is what the original trailer (without the extra length or lq's). He told me to add about 1000 lbs per extra foot which on mine was three feet. I don't know if this is completely accurate but that was the info I received.

We just bought a 2003 Featherlite 8587, 3 horse with a 13' shortfall, all factory. We were told the weight on it was 9700 lbs. Hope this helps!

But that's just the trailer weight you still need to add horses, water tack, hay, food, clothes etc. at least here in MA you need to register it for what its rated for. The GVW tag should have axle ratings probably 7000 or 8000 each which would give you either 14000 or 16000. All our LQ trailers have had that plus a GVW rating which is usually a little higher than the combined axle rating

Thanks everyone for the help, I will check out the plate on the trailer tomorrow. Although I did find out it only cost $40.00 more plus new plate cost to go from an 11,000# to 16,000# tags. So even though my husband says to just get the 11, I think I will up the weight just to be safe. Since we usually only haul 2 horses or a Teryx we should be OK.

See if you qualify for an RV plate. Based on the size of our LQ (11' SW) we could get RV plates costing $15/yr. which was a substantial savings over weight based trailer plates. Rules and availability will vary by state.

That's the plus about being able to still run farm tags in Texas. $6.30 and weight is covered from 1-lb all the way to 34,000-lbs.

NOPE! Farm tag are jus that. For farm use only! All of my trucks and trailer have farm tags and been that way for years with zero issues. Got stopped back in Dec. with the LQ trailer coming back from Ok and the DPS ask about the farm tags being on the trailer, then ask where we had been and where we was going then said ok thank you and drive safe. Told him we had been to a trail ride with some friends for the weekend and heading back home to Decatur. As long as I am not hauling for hire we do not have to have a CDL here.....

Thanks for all the help. I now have 16,000 on trailer & 11,000 on the truck. So I guess I am exempt from DOT regulations since I'm not for hire and weigh under 27,000? I hope so, I didn't ask about RV tags because I believe in our state RV's are taxed like property so I think I'm better off with trailer tags. I really wanted a motor home but in checking the costs of both a bigger trailer just made more sense, not done with horses yet. We plan on hauling a Kawasaki Teryx and doing more traveling. For 30+ years we have not had a vacation without a horse trailer attached, I guess old habits are hard to break. Motel rooms just creep me out so I'm taking my own.

hogtownboss, the way I understand it you aren't suppose to drive over 150 miles from home or across state lines with farm tags. I have heard some of the DPS guys are cracking down on that now. I had driven out of state several times over the years and never had a problem either but hearing about people getting tickets now I went ahead and got regular tags on my truck and trailer. I am not as brave as I used to be, lol.

Please help! I have a 2 horse that I bought in Oklahoma. I lived in Oklahoma up until about 4 months ago. I have a bill of sell for the trailer but never got a tag or title for it. I us d it for private use and only went to rodeos in the state. I live in Illinois now and I need to get it up here. How do I register for a tag/title in Oklahoma or should I just register it in Illinois. The bill of sell has my name and my moms. At the time of purchase I was under 18, so her name had to go on it as well. Please help!
